Orienteering race (Billygoat) 1:44:30 [4]

Never managed to get into the groove of the race this year, and finished 9th.

Started wide to the right with the Canadian youngsters, saw but disregarded the option to the left of the line. We cruised way off to the right and had to climb straight up 30-50m climb to punch ~1min behind the lead. Pretty sloppy navigation and map contact in an important first leg.
Pushing uphill to catch up.
Saw possible trail option but the long marshes were a good handrail for me. Started to pass people as the plateau got flatter and got a better measure of distances and features around.
On compass, made a few slow micro-route-choices through the fallen trees.
After a little hesitation, decided for the left fork, where the navigation seemed easier and much less hilly. Was able to cruise a little better through the woods and finally saw a group ahead (Ali and Nico where in sight!) just before reaching the control. Followed the contours and the lines in between them pretty well.
Ali and Nico went straight for the wide re-entrance. I stayed closer to the red line, but did not gain too much to the control.
Now in a pack, my level of contact with the map decreased again, so was not able to make active decisions and leave the group.
Don't even remember this control right now without looking at the map again. Actually yes, got carried by the group lower than necessary and reacted only after Ali corrected to the control. She was orienteering quite well at that point.
Stayed behind to drink&gue and finally made some self made decisions again. Got to the control still behind, but at least I was confident of what I was doing.
Compass bearing took me almost there, Ali ahead nailed it so did not really gain much.
So, a little in distress for not being able to leave the group, I decided to head to 11 even after seeing Ali taking her skip control. Was almost perfectly under the line to the control, but felt my navigation slowing down quite a bit due to the sudden loneliness (in the mean time Ali caught up with Boris and Eric @12...and I lost the last train for the noble parts of the result list)
Made safe route-choices along the contours and had no problem reaching the control.
-14-15 Alone, I had fun following swamps and contours ahead, and felt pretty happy of my conduct through this part of the race.
If there was still something to lose, I lost it here. Did not see the obvious choice on trail, probably hidden to my sight in between the long cliffs down the slope. I instead opted for the top of the hill and then down the huge re-entrance. From there I did not really have a good attack-point and missed the cliff probably not by much. Was not able to relocate quickly so opted to skip the control and head to 17 just off the trail.
see above
Took the trail this time and nailed the control after some green.
Pretty serious downhill, got carried away to the left and decided to reach the trail and attack from there.
On the compass I was pretty clean.
-end a sprint around the campground trails, nothing mayor happened here for me.

Ended a little upset for my lack of organization and for some energies still in me, and wished maybe to have been a little more conservative to the first control in order to stay with the lead pack. At the same time, the park was great and overall really enjoyed the weekend. Lost to Ali for the second year in a row, and she quite deserved it once more.
