L Lower Leg, Calf Strain

2010-01-14 – 2010-02-14

Grade: 3

Probably due to over training and insufficient recovery. Insufficient recovery after Sabie & Dullstroom, followed by too heavy weights on calf raises and a fartlek session the next day.
Physio says I've put a few tears in the calf.
Frustrating injury as it suddenly appears after a bit or running. It has forced me to get back on the old MTB.

2 Feb. Back to the best physio. The root cause appears to be tight nerves in the neck & shoulder area - too much time in front of the computer! Various nerve stretches to work on.

11 Feb. Good run last night & calf is nearly back to normal. Bit of a problem into the left shoulder probably also stemming from the neck.

14 Feb. I reckon its pretty much sorted now. Just stiffness from runs.

Seems to be an ongoing problem. A couple of factors: (1) spending too much time sitting at the PC @ work & home. (2) Not giving myself enough time to recover after hard racing / training period. (3) It is not stretching as muscle stretch & mobility has been good. (4) Current theory is that the calf muscle is compensating for poor ankle proprioception. So am working on ankle stability exercises during gym sessions.
