R Lower Leg, Other

2020-03-17 – 2020-09-13

Grade: 2

I am reluctantly logging this as an injury today but really it started sometime in late January or early February. Ankle soreness and stiffness during some but not all runs, mainly at the beginning until it warms up, but sometimes persisting. I wondered if it could be scar tissue from my sprain in September, or perhaps tendinopathy.

Kim Baxter diagnosed mild achilles tendinitis via Zoom on 1st April. She recommended continued running with limited intensity and rehab exercises. This made little difference over two weeks, so I decided to take 9 days completely off running (18-26 April). I did more road biking and some nice walks. Then reintroduced running 3 times a week up to 6 km. It felt fine doing 6 km on alternate days, but as soon as I tried to increase the volume it started complaining again.

Second Zoom physio session on 14th May. Achilles tenonitis ruled out and working on posterior ankle impingement / joint inflammation / joint bone bruise or still possibly peroneii tendon (probably something residual from my fall last autumn).

Took a long time to build back up to regular and longer runs. Multi-day walks seemed to help. Finally did the Ulllswater Way on 13th September with no trouble from my ankle.
