L Knee, Other

2019-01-12 – 2019-12-04

Grade: 4

UPDATE DEC 4:
My knee has healed well and it is probably at 80% right now. Enough so I can start to go out Orienteering and Trail running in non extreme conditions. I have been to 2 local meets (OLOU and OCIN) and had very little knee pain. Both terrains were pretty mild with no extreme hills. After 2 years of no Orienteering or for that matter any activity at all, my body has become one big fat slab.

Update Oct 13, 2019: The Surgeon told me that most of my pain was not due to damaged cartilage but my kneecap was tracking way too far to the left. So the Lateral release surgery should take care of this (HOPE). Reading online notes regarding this type of surgery is a mixed bag. The swelling is insane and when I asked my Dr about it, he said that was normal for this type of surgery and that it might be swelled up for 3 months. What surprises everyone including me is that I have pretty much NO pain and 90 percent range of motion just 1 week after surgery. I have no pain walking. Nevertheless I am being cautious and prepared to wait until Jan if I have to. Next Dr Appt on Nov 5

Update Sept 24th Knee surgery on an OCD.
(Osteochondral Defect) plus lateral release on kneecap. Full recovery 4-6 months but this is unpredictable. I plan on going to the GA Navigator Cup but most likely will not compete. Could walk the courses though.

Update: 8/17/2019 Finally had MRI on bothersome L knee and it revealed a Osteochondral defect. Defective because I was born that way. My left knee cap moves to the left and that is not supposed to happen. The surgeon was surprised it took this long to start doing damage. So surgery is Sept 23 with Microfracture (graft the Cartilage and bone) Then a lateral release to fix the defect. My knee only hurt going up hills so I have to find Orienteering meets that are only downhill :). 2-6 months recovery. I am so hoping I can be back and in shape for the 2020 Nationals in Cincy
Also, all those other entries in my log related to knee was not what I thought they were. It was all one injury. Over 2 years of this (sandwiched around a broken foot)
---------------------------------------------------------
While sitting around waiting for my foot to heal, my left knee became painful. This is not new but just a new level of pain. Diagnosed as Arthritis under the kneecap. Had X-Rays taken in Late Feb and Sports injury specialist gave me a Steroid shot which helped. At some point I have to get that cleaned out. Good news is that I have nothing wrong with my knees and there is no bone to bone anywhere. Felt good enough in Mid march to start Walking and slow trail running. Long way back to full recovery but as long as I stretch and take care of my legs I should be back to normal by the summer.

Good Surgeon and I followed recovery instructions given to me after I learned my lesson from my slow healing foot
