L Knee, Other

2008-01-27 – 2008-02-18

Grade: 2

27 Jan 08
Pain on left side of left knee; mild during runs but pain in knee after runs when walking, especially down stairs. Pain goes away and comes back gradually, and is even slightly triggered by walking or swimming.

On a Hacienda run, I made the mistake of being overconfident and running too fast. Felt great, until about the halfway point. The pain was gone by the next day, but it left me dismayed that I still need to take it moderately slow for another week.

After two weeks of taking it easy and doing very little running, I think it is safe to say that keeping a slow pace while gradually increasing running will keep the pain from reoccurring. I felt no hint of pain on my 1 mile run tonight. While it is true that the pain usually occurs after about 2 miles, I believe by slowly increasing distance I can push that back.

While it was difficult for force myself to run slowly even after I was confident my knee had improved, doing this and keeping a stable but low weekly mileage helped prevent the pain from reoccuring.
