HalvVasan 45K ski race
Going up with my colleague Roger like last year, but he had entered earlier and had a good starting position while I didn´t start until noon in the 8th starting group.

Nice conditions, mostly overcast but also a little sun showing from time to time. Relatively cold in the morning, -7C or thereabouts, and a bit warmer with temps above zero later in the day. Snow was not affected though and I was going with my usual cold wax all the way (4 layers of Skigo HF Blue), which worked fine. Lost a bit of grip in some sections but nothing seriously bad since very much is double-poling anyway.

Got a very good starting position in my group right by the starting line so I got off to a good - and possibly too fast - start. Kept a good pace the first 5-6 km´s when I felt the first effects of my unobstructed opening. Last year we were constantly criss-crossing between and passing slower runners to get a better position in the tracks - nothing of that this year though which also meant I could keep skiing too fast and too optimistically in the beginning.

Three minutes faster than last year by the first water stop at 8 K was a positive sign, but I lost that edge relatively quickly and stayed very close to my previous splits basically all the way to ~30K. I was struggling a lot to stay close to those splits but then started losing my speed - about 30 sec/km - the rest of the way to the finish.

Had been hoping to do 3:15 or thereabouts again - if not faster - but a combination of fatígue and slower tracks made me miss that with a relatively big margin. Under 3:30 was OK though and I´m not too disappointed - I know what I haven´t done that I did last year and without the proper base you can´t expect wonders...

HalvVasan 45 KM
Weather sunny and warm. Temps around 2C at the start (a bit colder in the snow) and gradually getting warmer.

Another day in the ski tracks between Oxberg and Mora (my startnr 159). Weather had been a bit uncertain and the new snow on Monday made waxing a bit more of a problem. We were still convinced that Klister wax was the way to go and it worked out OK even in the sometimes cold fine grained snow right after the start and in most uphills.

I did this with my colleague Roger (startnr 58) and we stayed together or at least within reasonable sight of each other for most of the race. My son Anders (startnr 3819) also raced, but he is considerably faster and disappeared early on. The start was a very slow procedure - after the "seeded" group had left in a mass start at 10:00 we had to wait in "line" to get over the start line where our timing chips activated the timing. We got under way at 10:20.

The first part of the course is mainly flat - some distance even on a lake - with a few minor hills. Lots of people in the way - earlier starters - forced us go outside the tracks and jumping between tracks a lot to pass slower skiers.

After about 8 KM we started going up the first big hill, a longish but not very steep section. Then followed a section with mixed uphills and downhills until just before Oxberg where the only *really* steep hills are.
We passed the official timing in Oxberg (16 KM, 1:13:53) in a decent time - just under the 75 minutes I had calculated would be good for our 3:30 goal time.

From there I had estimated that a time around two hours would be doable for the remaining part of the course (I had 1:48 on Friday). We hit the considerably faster tracks to the next timed control in Hökberg (25+ KM, 1:55:48) and did it a couple of minutes slower than Friday. We had then of course been skiing for over an hour more and were not as fresh and maybe the tracks were also a bit slower. We stopped for just over two minutes there for refreshments and also for Roger to tape a blister in his hand.

Roger disappeared temporarily in the fast down hills directly after Hökberg - when I lost some speed being stuck behind slower skiers for a while - I didn´t even see him for a long stretch, but caught up after 5-6 KM just before Läde. We kept moving on at a decent pace and I then started to calculate with a finishing time around 3:15, which would be well under our common goal. Another shortish stop at Eldris (36 KM, 2:39:38) before the final stretch to the finish in Mora.

Even though I started to get really tired - mostly in my arms - I tried to push forward in my double poling, knowing that these final km´s were the fastest and easiest of the whole course. Long stretches here were still icy and fast but the tracks were also gradually getting slower and slower in the warm temps. I left Roger for a while when he stopped to get a piece of chocolate, but he caught up again in Moraparken just before the finish. The last few km´s were really slow and we were struggling in the wet snow that slowed down the double poling considerably (temp at that time around +7C). In the two final bumps (minor hills) before the finish stretch I just didn´t have enough energy to hang on to Roger so he finished 25 seconds ahead.

Over all a nice day of skiing, mostly in good and fast tracks - times under our goal so we were pleased. Anders finished in 2:48 which was under his 3hr-goal.
