Race Evaluation

Rocky Mountain 1000 Day: Green Night-O

1. Underrated difficulty
Bad distance judgement
Disturbed by others
+17:00
Basically just didn't go far enough, despite thinking I was way too far. Ended up going up the reentrant looking for #2, then not seeing that and heading all the way back to the start of the woods. Next time down just kept going.
2. On compass. A lot of light around the area, which made finding the control hard, since the lights are much brighter.
3. Just left of straight.
4. Straight
5. Fence came up awfully quick. Crossed it where it was just rails at the woods, then on compass.
6. To the right, aiming for the trail just under the wooded thumb sticking off the hill. Couldn't see the trail on the ground, though. Then pretty straight from there, reading the wooded patches.
7. Confused parallel features
+14:00
On compass, and not much in the way of attack points. Hit a reentrant straight on, and correctly determined it wa the one two reentrants E, but couldn't find the control in the right reentrant system, so wandered back and forth for a long time checking reentrants, with Gavin Wyatt-Mair. I don't think I would ever have found it if he didn't, despite having been in the spot several times - kind of hidden in the bushes.
8. On compass, and staying above the reentrants on my left, using the wooded patches.
9. Bad compass work
+01:00
Plan was just NW of #2 and across the woods to the open spur, then W to control. Instead drifted too far W and came out near a flag on a knoll. Took bearing to finish and realized where I was. South across the two reentrants and in pretty easily.
10. Confused parallel features
+00:30
Didn't check run-in distance, and since there was no actual point, aimed about 100 m E of finish. When nothing showed up checked the clue sheet - ah! 200M! Pretty much walking here anyway.
F. Ted Good went by really quickly
