Rocky Mountain 1000 Day: Opening Sprint

jfredrickson

1. Expected the control to be at the northeast corner of the building on the knoll, and so wasn't sure which side of the building to go around. I decided to be safe and take the western side so that I didn't have to climb and discovered the control about 5 meters northeast of the building and nowhere near the knoll. I am glad I didn't climb the knoll but it was more luck than anything else.
2. Was a little confused by the curvature of the trail coming out of 2 but decided to ignore it since I was confident I was headed in the right direction. Saw the control from inside the reentrant just before it.
3. +00:05Started heading too far left out of the control then looked right and saw it before losing too much time.
4. +00:20Hit the boulders right on and went right to the boulder cluster in the middle of the circle. Didn't take the time to read the description and spent a good 20 seconds looking around the boulders before I saw it on the far side of the last boulder. It would have been nice to have a larger map scale to be able to see exactly which feature was in the center of the circle, but I can't complain because I really should have read the description which explicitly stated that the control was on the southeast side of the southeastern boulder.
5. The light green turned out to be a very distinct handrail and carried me right to the hillside where I could easily pick out the little hills west of the control and used those to aim off and hit the control.
6. Stayed left around the hills and curved in.
7. High around the reentrant and in to the right side of the hill.
8. Just straight in.
9. +00:15Started to really feel the altitude here and slowed down more than I should have. This is the point where I should have really started to push hard and I didn't quite do it. I hit the trail where the little circle is in it and just crossed it directly. Saw the hill south of the control but instead of using it to aim off and hit my control I blanked out and just ran to it. As I approached it I realized what I was doing changed direction to attack the control. I guess I just lost my focus as I started to slow down and I was just sort of hanging on after that. I don't know why I wasn't able to push through and maintain the high intensity.
10. Just straight down along the hillside and in.
11. +00:15I was really lazy on this one and didn't really pick out a route. I thought I could just run towards the finish and I would hit the control. I ended up being too far left and almost missed the control completely but I saw it as I was running by the little hill, but I was already far enough left to lose a good 15 seconds trying to recover.
F. Down and in.
