Race Evaluation

Rocky Mountain 1000 Day: Chase

Tundra/Desert

1. Starting so far back, I had a clean and mostly solitary race. I was confused a bit by the lack of Control 1 on my map, not having studied the control dscriptions in advance, but figured out it was one of Swampfox's tricks, like having 17 Control 7's at the Chase in 1997, or 1:17,000 maps in 1998.
2. I passed a few people on this leg. They all went too far left.
3. I think I passed Jeff the Coach and Hillary on this leg. A few other people, too.
4. On this leg, I recall starting out with Malcolm W-M and Gabe Svobodny. We passed Marty H-T about halfway. The other two fell a tad behind, so I had to navigate.
5. I pulled away from the three juniors, and saw Dave Pruden ahead. I raced hard to catch up but could not.
6. I wanted to go around to the right, but ended up going pretty straight. Shortly after crossing the aspen marshes, I looked back and saw no one. On the way up the hill, I recalled the situation around Prologue's Control 6, and used the unmapped trail for just a hair. There was nobody in the whole woods as I got to the control.
7. As I was going through the finish area, I saw a train of people descending upon the control marked as #9. I could identify J-P, PG, Dave Pruden, Tom Carr, and probably Ernst Linder and Matej.
8. I noticed that the train left on the trail, taking a wide around-to-the-right route. PG was in the train, and I never question PG.
9. I saw nobody (except crossing later starters) on the leg, but as I got to the control, J-P emerged. I passed him.
10. I went wide and high, as I tend to. As I got close, Dave P was leaving towards the next conrol. I could not have been more than 30 s back.
11. So I ran hard to catch up, but there was no sight of Dave. Tom Carr was exiting the control as I was approaching.
12. Bad map reading
+00:30
I had studied the map for this short leg in advance and thought I knew what to do to catch Tom and Dave, but was off to the right. I stopped and found myself.
13. Tom pulled ahead, but I almost caught up. I noticed Dave P had caught up to the PG train, and that the train was just over a minute ahead of me.
14. I followed Tom, who was moving clearly slower than the train. Tom kept going too wide to the right. We ended up in the same area of Prologue #6 that I had already been to twice. I identified the unmapped trail and corrected hard to the left. I had no problem getting to the control from there. Tom reacted slowed, and kept going wider. Goig so far off the line wasn't particularly bad, but if I were to catch the PG train I should have executed this leg much straighter, and much faster.
F. Matej punched the last control a few seconds before me, and I could not catch up.
