Rocky Mountain 1000 Day: Prologue

Tundra/Desert

1. Bad map reading
+00:25
The route is posted. I started last, so there was little traffic in the woods. I noticed Control 2 on the way and checked it out. A mistake.
2. I recovered and ran well, until...

5. Bad map reading
Confused parallel features
+02:25
... I passed some kids on this leg, got quite confident, bounced off the large cliff and ran towards the only mapped knoll with a rock—must be mine! But nothing there. I suddenly lost all confidence I had and proceeded to check out the surroundings. Turned out that there were two more knolls. One was covered by the line, and the other (a dot knoll), by the digit 5. I should have just gone back to the large cliffs and reflected again, but I made four search loops instead.
6. Bad compass work
+02:00
Too excited, I exited in the wrong diretion, read nothing on the way, overran the location in distance, found an unmapped N–S trail, then some knolls, then stopped. Some older folks (Gookin) were looking there. I reset by going about a third of the distance back to where I came from, found a clear attackpoint (a large boulder), and went to the control.
7. Two horrible bobbles in a row... I raced along the unmapped trail, saw a large knoll, went there—not mine, but clear where I was, not too far off the line. Corrected.
8. By this leg I regained some confidence and had no more problems.
