Race Evaluation

West Point A meet: Green 2X

Charlie

1. +04:00Mightily frustrating. Up to the clearing on top, on compass over the hill, and then in a morass of boulders, stone walls and barberry forests, thrashing back and forth looking for the elusive .5 M boulder. Bingo!
2. Left of the buildings and down path through the green.
3.
4. Up trail to just past rocky spur, then up on spur from side and straight.
5. Along top, favoring left side.
6. Through yellow, but did not climb to trail. Stayed low and spiked it. Laurie Collinsworth ahead went up to trail and was much slower getting there.
7. +02:00Aiming for around bend in trail to SW, but drifted too far W to road. SHould have stayed on it, but took trail from near building around, past wet area, tehn W across tip of spur, past root stock and in. Seemed like there were a couple extra rocks in there.
8. +10:00WSW across marsh, then didn't see trail, and went up reentrant that I thought was the one mapped with a trickle for maybe 100-150 M, then S to line of cliffs then right along cliffs to where I was expecting control but nothing looked right. Cast around for quite a while before dropping back down to spring, then up carefully across funny shaped knoll E of control and in. Hans Bengtsson, who started 4 minutes behind and was walking, caught me there.
9. +02:00Basically on compass. Heading up hill saw a boulder that looked right, but didn't see flag so went up a little higher to find small knoll W of control. Back down to that attractive looking rock with flag tucked in way low.
10. Just slow fighting through the blueberries uphill. Went around marshy green on the right, and checked off lots of boulders, rootstocks, bare rock on the way. In contact all the way. Hans and I are still together. He walked up this hill as fast as I could run.
11. Left under the cliffs, then could see the long narrow knoll ahead and ran straight to it.
12. On compass. Saw manmade object on the way.
13. +03:30Across knoll, then tried not to lose too much height. Everything was going great till I got freaked out by a large reentrant draining NW that was not on the map. Ran in circles for a bit, then down and up to find it, about 20 meters from where I freaked out in the first place.
14. Planned to go up the reentrant and around hill to the left by powerline, but drifted down hill a bit and when I got to the big hill it looked like a real long way around, so sucked it up and climbed over it. Nice navigating from on top. Made it pretty easy.
15. Slightly right of line across knoll, then a few steps N on small trail to clearing and down under cliffs. I was up too high, but could see the reentrant developing and no problem, other than gingerly descent.
16. Another gingerly descent, trying to get to the road as efficiently as possible.
