Race Evaluation

US Short and Long Championships: Brown

tonyf

1. Length has 100 m added to start triangle. Left trail angling downhill about half way to start triangle in order to run the base of the steep slope. Crossed the stream on the flat below the junction and easily hit control.
2. Up the first steep pitch to the trail, then decided to take the trail to the stream crossing and follow stream to control. Climbing on the trail was a little easier (less steep) but then woods were a bit ratty ups tream to the control. Might have been faster to stay on line, but there was a lot of steep climb on this leg so can't estimate "best" time.
3. Aimes southeast for power line, but actually hit it sooner, before the road left the power line. As fast as possible down the power line through mud and down steep slippery gravel. Straight across road to trail, passing Hilary C., but then slowed down too soon trying to decipher all the side logging roads. Hilary almost beat me to the control.
4. Crossed the stream to west and then had to recross it, leaving Hilary confused as to what I was doing! Me too. Then trail all the way to the ditch.
5. I had already determined to go around through the fields, aided by local knowledge of the camping area! Took main trail to main road, then road through fields and touched my tent on the way by. Cut through white to trail end and down to control. I think this was the best route - too much marshy ground, green, contours, and uncertainty on direct or southern routes.
6. Up the stream then uphill to the sharp trail bend, then the second trail south (after overrunning it a few meters).
7. +01:15Left the water stop and MaryJo heading for the long leg to number 8 !! Recovered after going 150 m north through slash trying to pick up a logging road. Fortunately easy recover west to stream then control.
8. Northwest across various trails and up the north-trending reeentrant on a herd path through tons of leafless poison ivy to get to the main trail north. Once again I had decided to go the long but flat and easy route through the camping field and once again touched my tent. This was a long (1.3 km) very flat road race and I was at my wheezing point the whole way, past the finish and the last controls with easy attack.
9. Reverse to the reentrant I'd already checked out.
10. Straight through woods
F. Another nice short runin.
