Race Evaluation

Birkhead Wilderness Classic (US Classic Champs): Blue day 2

ifjones

1. +00:30Just followed the compass to the right reentrant. I ended up drfiting on the way there, though, so I did not know what side of the point I was on. Took a chance and went right and the point was there.
2. +00:40Took a rough bearing and ran until I hit the trail. Ran along the trail until I saw the reentrant and took a right. Ran into the boulder to the west of the point and looked at the map for a moment before continuing on to the point. (Instead of following the trail briefly I could have just taken the direct bearing)
3. +00:05Took a straight line to the point, but hesitated on the way there.
4. +15:00Took a bearing, but drifted real bad to the south. Correctly relocated myself, but when I tried going to the point I did track my distance well and lost confidence when the vegetation changed. Turned around and again relocated correctly, but still had problems believing it. Eventually saw Keith running by and realized that I had not gone far enough. Quickly found the point after that. (should have followed my bearing more closely and used my pace count. Also, should have used the stream as a backstop and run without fear of going to far)
5. +01:30Took a compass bearing, but did not follow it too well. Let myself get sucked down the slope with the belief that I would be able to correct for it on the other side of the creek. Ended up going to a feature that I thought was the control, but it wasn't. Went back down to the indistinct trail and was able to use the end of it as an attackpoint to find the point.
6. Used the rocky hilltop to the SW of the point to elongate it and was able to find it pretty easily.
7. Just took a bearing and ran. Found the point pretty easily.
8. +00:30Decided to follow a rough bearing until I hit the stream to the north of the point and follow it until it disappeared, using that as an attackpoint. It ended up working pretty well, although I ran it pretty slow and hesitated once I hit the stream.
9. +00:50Drifted left the way to the point. Hesitated halfway through. Ended up almost missing the point, but saw it as I was standing there trying to locate myself.
