Race Evaluation

US Short and Long Championships: Green X2 (Long-O)

PBricker

1. +01:20Misread the map and thought I had to drop down, when in fact it was a straight contour. So, I angled down the hillside and was confused when I hit the reentrant. Then up the hillside and over to it.
2. Staight.
3. Pretty much followed the stream, past the marsh, counting reentrants, to the complicated region. Wasn't sure exactly where I was, but saw the flag off a bit to my right: good thing Glen didn't put it in the depression!
4. Straight, attacking from where trail comes closest to road.
5. Not the best route, though I executed it well. (I picked a route that looked OK without taking the time to compare all the options, even though I had plenty of time to do so while running on the trails: just laziness). Anyway, I went north to the trail, down to the marsh, turned left heading west, then curve around going north, then at the intersection where I should have gone west I went straight, taking trails northwest to the road (east of 5), then climbing up along the reentrant, past the stone wall, and spiked it. Added some distnce and a lot of climb.
6. Right of the little cliff half way, then right to it. Slow on the rocky ground.
7. Another bad route choice (same as Charlie's). I had originally planned on taking the obvious trail route that leaves from near the bend in the road, but I hit the road left of the building, and from there it seemed just as good to head down the hill and out to the main road. (I also thought it would save some climb, but looking now, it only saved one line). Anyway, I executed well from there: road, to trail cutoff, to road, turn right into parking area, attack from the big building, right of knoll, over trail, right of two cliffs, and right to it.
8. Got caught in nasty vines coming out to the trail.
9. Includes time at aid station. Took trail all the way to stream, where there were elephant tracks crossing the marsh, making this an easy spike.
10. Straight.
11. Good route choice, though too tired to run well. Trail along the marsh, then up the reentrant where the trail turns north, to the trail going south, to the trail going WNW to the road. Then cut the corner and spiked it.
12.
13. Across the rough open area to the stone wall, but the passage of white was very green and it took some time getting to the marsh which I passed on the left, then south to the reentrant, crossing at the junction, and then a long, slow walk up the hill.
14. +00:20Went right of line past the start line (not the triangle), then through the camp and down the hill to it. Easy, but added two lines of climb for no good reason: should have gone straight to the trail.
F. Thanks, Glen, for a satisfying day in the woods.
