GEORGIA NAVIGATOR CUP: Day 2 Red

Cristina

1. +02:30Suffered from a bit of distance hallucination, thinking I'd covered several hundred meters rather than, like, 50. Wow. Or rather, I got to a reentrant on the side of the long spur and assumed that I it must be the one at the end because I'd been running "for a bit". Took me a couple of minutes to figure that out, though I could still hardly believe that I could possibly have made a "parallel" error of such a large magnitude. Luckily I believed it enough to actually get to the control okay from there.
2. Started a little hesitant given my goof up on the first leg, but straight on the line and straight up the reentrant was pretty simple.
3. Got into a bit of a groove here, doing a good job of keeping track of where I was. Not tempted in the least by a control slightly off the line that I knew wasn't mine. Basically ran the line.
4. Still moving well. Dropped down the hill to the stream, found myself a little left of the large reentrant.
5. +00:10The only short leg of the weekend! I'm surprised at how long it takes me to cover ~200m, so I'm ashamed to say that I actually stopped to look at the map in the middle of this leg, just to make sure I was going the right way. Not really necessary (though given my performance later in the course, maybe it was...)
6. Still feeling pretty good. Contoured around the first hill then straight over the next spur and nailed the control. Angelica caught me at 5 and went right of the line instead, taking a longer route and attacking from the left, but I still barely beat her to the bag.
7. +00:15this one was tricky, not much to go off of near the circle. Stayed right of the line (and the stream) down the the trail/gully intersection and then just tring to watch out for the subtle reentrant housing the gully. I ended up right but corrected fairly quickly.
8. I thought this was the "one big climb", but it was just a warm up. Headed up the hill to the left of the first reentrat with the rocks in it. Got up to where it flattened out a bit and hit it right on. I was worried at first about going diagonally up the hill to a small reentrat feature, but it was really the only thing there, and the mildly flatter section of the hillside was almost like a handrailable linear feature.
9. +00:20This was straight forward, contoured along the hill, ticking off reentrants and curled around to the bag. Though...I fooled myself into thinking I was there one reentrant too soon, luckily didn't loose time being confused because of the large rootstock (the only feature in any of the reentrants).
10. +02:00Totally went the wrong way. Intended to run the line, crosseing the three large reentrants on the way. Instead ran down towards the bottom of the first reentrant and straight back over to number 6. Good thing that bag was there, because that made for a very quick recovery. Ran up to the trail and headed up THE big climb right past the sneakily placed *other* control on a rootstock halfway down the hill.
11. +02:30Contoured along the top of the first, close reentrant thinking it was the next one (hunh?) and ended up way right, though thankfully right by one of the only trail intersections on the map, again allowing a rather quick recovery. From there it was just a matter of down to the bottom of the main reentrant and cutting across the hillside to the control.
12. This one was just like 9. No problems, felt confident again.
13. +05:30I'm not sure what I did here. Confused myself and ran around for a bit. I was excited to be able to finish in what (for me) would be a fast red. Maybe I should cover my watch... I ended up relocating based on how far away the cars on the road sounded, convincing myself that I was on the right spur. I wish I had a clue as to what I did, aside from running the wrong way out of the bag.
14. I even had a little trouble on this one, getting drawn to the right along the spur, closer to the reentrant. I guess hitting the trail earlier isn't a bad thing.
F. Not as zippy as usual, but at least it wasn't all uphill like yesterday...
