Race Evaluation

NEOC - Mt. Tom: Red

dness

1. (couldn't find my split-taking watch. total time for now is an estimate). Wasn't sure how I would do -- hadn't run for a couple of weeks (boy would I pay). First leg went really well -- followed trail by lake then cut up to find saddle W of control, spiked.
2. Followed compass, spiked the control -- the wrong control. Figured out where I was, but then proceeded the wrong way for a while before turning around.
3. Followed tracks until I saw the knoll just above the control, then went straight in the direction of the control through fresh snow, spiked it.
4. Decent leg. Got to the control before I expected.
5. Followed reentrant up (going slow, feeling it...) Then briefly got confused by the contours -- thought I was heading for a long reentrant, but it was a spur! D'oh.
6. Got to the hill OK, but for some reason thought the control was on the SE corner (sometimes my brain reorients so that it thinks I'm going N even when I'm going another direction). Wandered a little, then headed back to it -- saw Glen T. punching.
7. Around R of pond, no problem.
8. Poor route choice to right, but found control ok, just did unnecessary side-slope & climb.
9. Navigated ok, got to within 20m of rock then took me a few seconds to see it ( it was covered with snow).
10. Thought I'd run on a compass bearing, then use the pond to orient myself. I thought I saw a pond, crossed a little reentrant, then found a nice N-S reentrant to follow. Where are the tracks??? Turns out I was high. Don't know what I thought was a pond. Lost a lot of time here.
11. N to trail, run it all the way around till stream crossing. In a change of plan, headed up there. Right through the briars! Then straight, no problem since the boulder above the control was visible from a long way off.
12. George passed me on this leg.
13. Briefly considered going up to the left, which in hindsight would have been far superior, but instead followed George up the reentrant. What was that by the control -- a wasp's nest?
14. Not a good day... I miscounted the hillsides I was passing, and went to cross the stream too early. Too wide. Then it dawned on me that there was a trail across the stream, so I backtracked, went N and found it.
15. Took a circuitous route, ended up too low, but not too much time lost.
16. Thought I'd head E to the flat area first. Somehow didn't quite succeed and had to reorient from the trail jct. Met Tori at the control.
17. Retraced my steps to the trail jct, where I followed Tori down the upper trail -- I led her into the nondescript spur.
18. Not a very good route choice, but the road was too tempting. But somehow I didn't make it to the road until the stream crossing. Dropped down to the stream a little early (by the big boulder), but figured out where I was.
19. Ran across the parking lot. Couldn't avoid getting wet. Treacherous little control location!
F. Thanks, Phil. Nice day in the woods (as long as you bundle up!) Note to self: Train next week for the NEOC champs!
