UNO Camping Weekend: THE MEGA

Charlie

1. Mostly every 5th control, but I got a little flummoxed in the 150s and 160s, and not sure exactly where I punched there.

27. This was the first time I had to check the clue sheet. I was standing on the knoll, but didn't think to look down the rocky face to the W foot, until I read about it. This was also the first time I saw anybody. I think it was a rec runner, off to my left.
28. Water stop! Drank about a quart! Pretty hot out there.

60. Somewhere around here was when I first saw Phil. He was going a fair amount slower, and offered me praise and encouragement.
61. About here Hammer went by at very high speed indeed!
62. Another golden horseshoe guy went by on this leg at high speed, but boomed this one, and perhaps some others, as I saw him again later. I lost contact briefly chasing him, but relocated okay.
63.
64. Katarina Smith passed me here, and went down the cliff. I kept on top to the end, but got stuck in the deadfall and got there after her.
65. Chased her for a bit, and she had to fuss around in the circle, so I caught up at the flag. Golden Horseshoe showed up here again, coming from another direction.

70.
71. Saw the big cliff coming, so read the clue in advance. W foot - great, attacked from the W and avoided getting stuck on top.
72. Read this clue as well, to make sure this was the place to climb between walls. In from NE, grab punch, then out to SW.
73.
74. +04:00First major error. Thought I was in the right reentrant (I was one short) and wandered up and down a few times, then backtracked one reentrant (more wandering), before relocating on stonewall end. Phil caught back up, and there was a crowd there, including Dave Dunham and others. Dave and his crowd disappeared quickly.
75. With Phil.

77. With Phil
78. Got ahead of Phil here, spiked it, and didn't see him any more.
79.
80. Not sure where the first sighting was, but somewhere around here I ran into Randy and Eddie.
81.
82.
83.
84.
85. Eddie and Randy pulled me along pretty fast through these. They were punching, which slowed them down, and they were wavering enough to let me keep up.
86. E & R sprinted down the hill and got away, which was just as well for me, as the control was up higher at the end of the pond. I could hear cussing from down below.
87. Alone for the next several.
88.
89.
90.
91. Somewhere around here E & R showed back up. Regrettably, I heckled them rudely. Eddie ambiguously replied that he would "see me at the finish". Was this just a friendly greeting? An expression of dominance? A not-so-veiled threat? Who knows. Anyway, I regret my foolish remark, made in the brain impaired state running in the woods can instigate.

98. The last of E & R. Can't keep up any more.
99.
100.
101. Halfway, more or less, and stopped to drink for quite a while, and to eat a packet of gu. Also removed a rock from my shoe.
102.
103.
104.
105.
106.
107. Walked up the hill. A little worried about it, but came out right on top of it. Didn't see the bag at first, but saw the boulder off to my left and then looked back to see the bag about 8 feet away from me!
108.
109.
110. +00:45Planned to go around the green, but saw an orange looking dead branch in there, so pushed on in, and missed the fenced in area anyway. Out to the path and had to find it.
111.
112.
113.
114. +00:15Wandered up and down the stream a bit without seeing it, until I went to the cliff just N of control. Sometimes I can't see the relatively more faded bags, even if I'm looking right at them
115.
116. Somewhere around here Spike went by. He doesn't look like he's going all that fast, but he covers a lot of ground quickly!
117.
118. +00:20Spike got away from me, but on the other side of the marsh I found him again, looking at the map. We were in the reentrant SW of the control.
119. Chatting with Spike was pleasant, but distracting and we had to cut it out.
120. Beaver dam was yucky crossing. However, wet feet didn't bother me, as I feared they might. Slow climbing here, and stopped a bit short. Spike was long gone.
121. +00:30Got to the right general area, but a little trouble finding the control.
122. Had to read the clue, as I was looking on the cliffs. A little higher up than I thought, and a little tucked in behind a rockface
123.
124. Another one where I was in the right place but just didn't see the flag. Looked up and down the reentrant, then read the clue. Hmm. Thicket? Kind of a thin one. Oh there it is.

134. Up the hill, Biggins behind me and a bit to the left.
135. Biggins in front.
136. Biggins in front again. Both of us climbed down the wrong end of the cliff and had to clamber along beneath it to the proper end.
137.
138. Walking here, and feeling pretty tired. After drinking (a lot), felt even more tired and flushed. A minor crowd showed up, including Daniel and Ernst.
139. Leading around left side of the marsh and in, but after this one the crowd got by.
140.
141. The last I saw of Ernst and company.
142.
143.
144.
145. +04:00Lost focus and wandered off to the right. It should have been obvious I was too low in the reentrant from how broad it was, but it took me a while to figure it out. Read the clue. Finally saw someone, maybe Greg, heading up far side of reentrant, so I knew about the right level, and eventually found it. Quite a few rec orienteers in this general area and the next 25 or so controls.
146. Having trouble reading the map by now, because my map case is crinkly and throwing off way too much glare. Also, my map had folded here a few times, so the boulder cluster had worn off, and there was no feature in the center of the circle on my map. Read the clue, with some puzzlement, but went to the circle and found it fine.
147. Read the clue again. Getting to be a habit.

158. The long leg was fun. Towards the end Brendan Shields passed me, but then he walked up the hill so I passed him again.
159. With Brendan, and with Sam and Suzanne coming up behind. One of them asked if it mattered which order (which was the first I realized the boulder had three bags. Very cute.
160.
161. Ran into a broken dead branch just above where the control was hung, poking a hole in my chest. Ouch!!!
162. Sam led the parade for the next 10 or 12, with Brendan falling off pretty quickly, and Suzanne hanging fairly close to Sam. I was further back but keeping them in sight. They weren't running mega-fast, but Sam was really accurate. I was reading the map, but appreciative of the general guidance.

179. Punched the watch early, as I misread which circle the 180 belonged to.
180. First aid station - nice touch, a box of bandaids!

184.
185. +01:30Thought I had it figured out, but ended up on the wrong trail anyway. When I could see the water I knew there was no choice but to head up! Darn.
186.
187. +00:30Another boom. A little high, on purpose because I thought it would make it easy. Saw the field on my left, but the bag was much lower on the hill than I thought it would be.
188. +00:15Through the fight. Not terrible, but best avoided.
189.
190.

F. Had to hop in with cramped hamstring. Pretty jolly that it didn't happen any sooner. J-J, you've outdone yourself. This was a stunning achievement and a really fine time.
