Race Evaluation

Colorado 5-day Day 1: Red

jeffw

1. Ran up the road, crossed the spur and saw the knolls on my left.
2. Ran for the big clearing. Ran around the spur to the right. Saw the aspens mapped as distinct vegetation. Went up the reentrant/clearing, then found my way to the control.
3. Went up and over to the clearing. Then went below the cliffs. Gouged a big chunk out of my side with a branch. Had problems in the circle.
4. Took a bearing and was a little high. Didn't see the marker right away as from my vantage point it was lower than the ground cover.
5. Went straight again and came out just south of the aspens. Went up the hill at the 2 cliffs.
6. Went straight passed the rock features. Could see the control from a ways away.
7. Overshot this control going to the gray rock feature passed it.
8. Was afraid that the reentrant that I saw was not mine, so I stayed to the right. Hit the rocky stuff and realized my mistake. Cut over and missed just a little at the end--there was another little cliff nearby.
9. Long slog from big clearing to big clearing. Hit the road/clearing and could see the 3 trees shown on the map. Went straight from there trying to read everything on the way.
10. Could see the control control across the way, but could get there on the straight route. Had to go way down, then crawl back up.
11. Went up out of control 10. Went past control 9. Tried to contour from there to keep my height, but the running through the cliffs in the white was crappy, so I dropped down to the clearing. Went up the little clearing finger to the control.
12. Meant to go straight here, but somehow ended up at the trail loop. Could see my obvious error and went around the right side of the hill. I noticed that had the song Goldfinger playing in my head. It might have been because I met Peter Golde for the first time before the start.
13. Went through the clearing. Could see the hill near the control, and raced around to the left where it looked like the saddle must be, no control. Looked to my right and saw my control between 2 cliffs?!
14. Made a death defying exit from the control. Had to go down over a couple of cliffs. Not the best plan. I was sloppy in the circle on this one.
15. Stayed to the left of all the junk. Found the control okay. The song in my head had changed to "Beverly Hills" by Wheezer (not that I knew that at the time).
16. Went to the clearing to the right of the line. Went passed to 2 grey rock features to the control.
17. Ran for the big clearing to the W of the control.
18. Up the right side of the reentrant.
F. Run for the finish. Because of the rain and my poor choice of ink, I couldn't read my control numbers on my punch card. I realized *afterwards* that the descriptions were on the map.
