Race Evaluation

DVOA-Stuckey Pond: Blue

dness

1. I was almost to the first clearing when I found I was holding the pen from the box in my hand. Since I knew it wasn't going to affect my placing , I ran back and returned it. On the way to the control, looked for rocky ground after the stone wall, but didn't find it and went too high.
2.
3. Considered the S-shaped route but didn't like the looks of the cliffs on the N side of the N pond, so just ran trails to E of the control, then over the hill
4. Reversed my previous route. Then took trails -- almost had a disaster when I started up the wrong reentrant. Corrected myself in time though, but was still hesitant as to whether I had done it right. Managed to find #5, then compass bearing from there.
5. Kinda fast cuz I'd just been here!
6. My eyesight not being that good, I didn't understand the mostly N-S reentrant I found myself in. It was the one with the control, but I went up too high, and then luckily saw it to my right.
7.
8. Was surprised to see a road in the reentrant and second-guessed myself. Lyn crossed my trail and when I looked back to see where she was heading, I saw the bag.
9.
10. Skirted marsh to right, followed stone wall and took a bearing from the stone wall corner -- thought I ran down the right nose, but actually ran down the left.

18. Followed the line, crossing the swamp where it was maybe 5 m wide. When I got to the ridge, looked for a saddle. Not even a hint of one! I went one more meter and saw the bag maybe 5 m away. Subtle feature.

F. Hey, maybe that Shaklee Performance stuff really works! I downed almost a quart of it before the race. That and a Gu and a Clif bar (not to mention camelback) got me through.
