Race Evaluation

CSU Rocky Woods: Red

jjcote

1. Roughly straight.
2. Down to the trail, started climbing through the woods when the trail turned right, and contoured in the last stretch.
3. Thought I was on the indistinct trail for a little while, probably my imagination.
4.
5. Left to take the trail across the marsh, then pretty close to straight the rest of the way. I was a little to the right when I got to the control, but I caught Jeff Schapiro, who looked like he had just overshot by a bit.
6. Jeff countoured higher, I went straighter though the low area.
7. Left around the first marsh, then straight.
8. Pulling ahead of Jeff on this leg.
9. Oops. Got into the light green, which was distinctly marshy and looking much more like an established wetland than just seasonal runoff (because of my route choice to #5, I hadn't run through here earlier), and convinced myself that I had gone down the hill too steeply and was at the mapped marsh (not that anything else on the map made sense in that context). Headed SW and bumped into the trail beyond the control, which I wasn't expecting. Stood there for a moment trying to figure out what trail it was, then Jeff cruised by and I realized that I had gotten too low and run right past the control, so I did an about face and got it.
10.
11. My brain never registered the bridge across the pond, and I ran around the end. The area near the control was thick with young pines, I found the boulder cluster pretty easily, but didn't see the control at first, and took a few steps toward the other boulders to make sure I was in the right place, then went further arround the cluster and found the control.
12. This went fine, lust to the left of the straight line, although I will note that there is a prominent knoll (at least as big as the control featue) just SW of the pond that does not appear on the map.
13.
14.
15. Nearly straight, which entailed a bunch of climb, so I wonder if it would have been faster to to left on the trail and then stay low. On the other hand, this is the leg when I caught back up to Jeff.
16. The green (young pines) was worse than indicated, and not exactly where the map shows. No trouble navigating, but slow moving.
17. Most of the way via trail.
18. Not well executed, I think I ran through the woods parallel to a trail for a ways. But I made decent time...
F. No time to hang around, I had theater tickets and a lot of driving ahead of me.
