Race Evaluation

DVOA Springton Manor: Red

bhall

1. Trail because I was not feeling running through that field. Was very odd looking up on a hill and seeing an actual control.
2. Was a bit worried about this one, but I hit it pretty dead on, so all was good.
3. Back up the hill and over, using the hill on my right as a cut off point. Got to the control well.
4. The fallen trees were pretty big, so this was not too hard to get.
5. Stayed too high, then went a little far, but my spidey sense kicked in, I went down a bit and saw the control. Lost some time (not sure how much though)
6. Just pushed up through the light green which wasn't too bad in places. The rocks down here are tiny!!!
7. Cut immediately to the trail then ran. There was a bit of an elephant track to the control which honestly was quite helpful as I made my way to the tiny rock. Can't get over how small they are compared to NEOC areas...
8. Back along the trail, cutting off at the stonewall, through ten and then up the reentrant.
9. Straight up, no problems.
10. Was very helpful to have already gone through this control because otherwise it would've been a compass and hope. Went well. Saw AJ.
11. All was well until I left the trail at the first stream instead of the second, then lost a bunch of time because I had gone up too far and had to get to 11 through some greener, swampyish woods. Heard AJ stomping around which was great when I had been three controls ahead of him minutes ago (I mean, I was expecting him to come flying by me at some point, I just had hoped it would've been a little bit later...)
12. Along the green between the field and river (stream?) which wasn't too bad to get through, although something tells me that it was not so fun at the beginning of the day.
13. Up the hill, no problems.
14. Around on the road to the pond, along the paved trail with some people dodging until the swamp, then down. The woods were a bit slow here, but I got through it without soaking my feet which is always nice. Got the control without too much trouble, although it felt a bit like I was just moving and hoping that I would see it.
15. Down along the bottom of the field and in from the trail. Totally fine, but perhaps a bit hesitant and slow.
16. Fine until the other side of the river (stream?) where I didn't really have a picture of where I was going, and hadn't read closely enough, so I lost a lot of time just stumbling along towards the control, hoping that I hadn't gone too far. Got it eventually, but lost a lot of time.
17. Cut to the road for a bit, left as I got closer to the road junction and as cars started to drive by (there wasn't all that much of a shoulder). Went into the woods a bit too deep and found the rootstocks, but got a little bit further and could see the control. Lost some time but again, not sure quite how much.
18. These flipping rocks are so small!!
19. A little slow getting to this one, hesitated but then looked closer and saw the ditch right by the control, and felt more comfortable just running until I hit that. Fine from there.
20. This was pretty much visible as soon as you stepped off the trail in the white, so no problems.
21. Found some path through the green, although my GPS track on the RG says that it perhaps was not the one marked. Either way it worked. Control was visible from the beginning of the field, so the only problem was climbing up the hill to get to it :)
22. Couldn't decide if I wanted to go above or below the crop land, went above but I think below was the better option. Cut into the woods immediately and then had to slowly make my way down the rocky stream to the control which lost me some time.
F. Debated going all the way up to the road, but then cut across the field (which was the better choice). Wiped out in an irrigation ditch which was great, but no pain from that so we're good.
