Race Evaluation

West Point Day 1: Red Y

1. Bad route choice
Unused to terrain
+15:00
Tried to go straight on a pace count - guessed wrong about how I went wrong. Up to the road to relocate. OK, now which of these boulders are mapped???
2. +01:00Careful now, maybe this won't be too bad.
3. Bad route choice
Did not plan ahead
Unused to terrain
+20:00
Yes, it'll be BAD. Ran down the road to the hairpin, leaving quite a climb - which is not easy when keep adjusting around boulders and cliffs. And, is it just me, or is it getting mighty foggy around here? Stumble on trail west of control (or is it south? I've never seen slanted meridians in my "vast" orienteering experience), follow it to bend just before it ends, no luck on attack - try again, same result - go back to trail: oh, it doesn't end at this bend, it goes on. What an idiot!
4. Hesitated
+04:00
Follow trail which is now covered in my footprints until it turns away from C4, then down hill to huge boulder across main trail. Lots of zig-zagging as I get close, making sure I don't miss the 13m cliff at a bad angle
5. Hesitated
+02:00
I actually can see some map features in real life this time, as I cautiously navigate this leg. Maybe things will turn around...
6. Bad route choice
Bad map reading
Confused parallel features
+12:00
No, things are falling apart: straight towards C6 (there has to be a way up the hills), until the cliffs and fog turn me into a mouse. Around to the left, and up, keep moving (slowly) as I try to figure out where I came up. Hmmm, a stream. I guess I only overshot by 300m!!
7. Straight
8. 100 minutes in (ouch) - I guess I'll stop for a drink.
9. Bad compass work
+02:00
Back to the trail ASAP, until it pointed me right at the control, looped around underneath (still can't figure out what is mapped, and what is not)
10. Up to the friendly trail again, attack from the bend 100+m past the fork
11. Bad map reading
+03:00
Went too close to the swamp, had to climb over boulders and trip over rocks. Tried to attack from prominent cliff feature but missed right and had to come back up.
12. Did not follow plan
+12:00
Stayed high to first major cliff, then started down, got distracted by a control down at the minor stream, failed to realize what a nice attack point that was, and climbed back too high. Wandered down for a bit until I figured out which cliff had the swampy area above it, then back up.
13. Lacked concentration
Disturbed by others
OK, so I'm at risk of OVT - can't have that. In my panic, I lose the pace count, overshoot (was also too high). Came back too far, about to turn around when I see a flag on a rock - and I guess you could possibly call that a reentrant. Two other guys that were around C12 are searching - I'll punch and get out of here. MFP!!!
14. Water not exactly where I expected, but I really roughed the compass, so OK (I thought)
15. +00:30Didn't see the trail to the last control on the map, so I ran down the spur to the intersection, then angled to the bridge
F. How many tries does it take to dip into the finish control after nearly 3 hours of mistake-filled Oing?
