Race Evaluation

WCOC Macedonia Meet: Blue

stever

1. +00:15Today is a land-mark for me. First time I've managed to take enough splits that I can post something semi-useful. Over the bridge, immediately left the trail to angle over to the clearing. Came up too far left.
2. Yawn.
3. Stagger up Mt. Everest. Left of stream, right of cliff. Don't understand why it's mapped light green. Too bad I missed this split. Going up hill is my weakest area, and I'm curious to see how much that impacts my total time.
4. +01:30Up to rhs of big boulder, join small trail just before intersection with big trail. Up reentrant until sadle begins to form. Worried about dark green around lake so angled right up to the top of ridge to find the white corridor. Down the otherside between the two lakes, and up the hill. Got too far right. Knew I was looking for a pair of boulders near a re-entrant, and I "found" them, enough so that I circled my boulders. No flag. Realize that "my" reentrant is too shallow, and that I'm too low. Countour up a bit, and there's the flag. Rats.
5. +01:30Down the hill's big reentrant, looking for the distinctive reentrant at the bottom and/or the big boulder. See the reentrant but laurel scares me away from heading over to the boulder. Instead go right to see if the spur gives easier travel. It didn't. Wiggle and thrash my way in the general direction of the control and pop out of the green about 40m left of the control.
6. Whee.
7. +02:00I wanted to follow the hillside more, but compass kept telling me to go lower. So went lower, got too far right, and got blocked by the green. Dumb. But I knew I was too far right, so corrected back up and out of the laurel, and popped out right at the big boulder. Trivial from there but again couldn't understand why the area around the control was mapped light green.
8. To avoid laurel, headed right, towards the rhs hill top. Hoped to see the mapped trail, but didn't. Probably over did keeping to the right. Anyway, a few contours from the top, started contouring over to the correct hill. Picked up the trail somewhere between the hills and up and in.
9. Hillside to right, tried to kept pretty high to save later climb but still got a bit lower than I wanted to. Here compass seemed to point too far left, but this time I ignored it. Up out of the saddle, puff, puff.
10. +01:30Worried that route to the east side of the lake might be blocked by green. So instead went north along the ridge towards #4, following the route of the intermitant trail, even though I didn't really see it. Continued along the ridge all the way to the re-entrant I took from #4 to #5 to avoid the mapped light green on the east side of the ridge. Head down to north end of lake, annoyed to see that again the light green was non-existant. Very slow in circle, scanning for the flag. It seemed farther than I expected.
11. Right around green and then up the hill. I think left would have been smarter.
12. +01:30Along left side of ridge top ... very thick and rough. Eventually thrashed through down to the trail. A brief trail run and then down the surprisingly long re-entrant. So rightish straight route would have been much better.
13. Chickened out going straight down the steep slope. Instead took the trail until it bends west, and then looped down to stream and in. But not before stopping to help a beginner relocate who was lost on the hillside.
14. Wheeeee! But again, light green?
15. Thought about jumping over the couple making out on the lawn in the clearing, but ran around them instead.
