Race Evaluation

WCOC Macedonia Meet: Blue

Charlie

1. +01:00Bad start. Didn't see anything that looked like a clearing, ended up at the white control at the end of the next wall
2. Uneventful. Up the trail, cut off before stream
3. Up up up. Followed the reentrant, stayed right of the big cliff
4. Over to small trail up edge of green, crossed larger trail and went through saddle SW. Got pretty badly hung up in laurel. Maybe that was John F. who passed me. Up the reentrant ENE of control and right in.
5. Dogleg back down hill, fought through some laurel. Lots of little spurs with bare rock on them. Finally realized I was S of the pond and the green S of control and had to fight through. Saw Clint coming in from above.
6. Easy
7. +04:00Trouble leaving, first I went W, then N, then E to trail and settled down. Cut off trail to get closer to straight line. Clint out of sight by now. Got a little right of line and saw big boulder SE of green reentrant. Came right in on compass to stand on top of cliff just N of control, but couldn't see bag. Went up and down reentrant a few times, stopped to tie both shoes, still no luck. Finally stumbled on faded bag.
8. +03:00Aimed right of line to go around green and find trail. Couldn't find trail and there was way more green. Ended up going around summit of hill 200 m NNW of control. Saw Clint heading down to W from saddle and convinced him to continue on S, to where he found bag much before I could, as it was also faded.
9. Pretty straight, lots of sidehill. I got a little lower than Clint, and fell behind as we climbed.
10. +02:00Headed north to saddle, then angled dow toward pond, skirting northern tip and heading on pace and compass through the green patches. Very slow checking all the thickets until I found the right one.
11. Wanted to go straight, but way too much green. Ended up circling a fair amount to the left, but it was all easy to read
12. +06:00Thought about going down to the trail, but most of the trails had been hard to see, so I just went over the top. Saw Jim Henderson, and wondered if he was going to 7 or 12. Lots of cliffs and small reentrants heading down the spur. Apparently Jim and I got off to the right, as we searched for quite a while until I decided to head out to the trail and found the control along the way.
13. +02:00Yuck. Tried to go down the cliffs but way too scary, ended up scrambling over to the creek. Finally got down to the reentrant that had the charcoal platform, but still didn't see it for a while.
14. Followed the stream. Went by the orange control on the way
15. Over the bridge, along the wall
16. Along the wall.
17. Aimed for the bend in the stream and stayed just above it
F. Field was marshy, stayed more to the woods.
