Race Evaluation

Flying Pig IX: Sprint

TimGood

1. A nice early start (14:03) so I had not seen everyone else running all over the area and giving away control locations and route choices. That included the first control since I was calling back to Vlad that the marker was almost dry instead of watching the starter in front of me. Saw the control ahead and it matched the description so I went to it while trying to find the start triangle.
2. +00:40Still had not located the start triangle and spent 30 frustrating seconds locating the finish and tracing the course backwards. Headed off on the line to #2 and promptly rolled my ankle while trying to read the map. Drifted right while hobbling along and came out to far to the N. Could see Dave Onkst had almost made up the start interval already but he headed toward me instead of the control.
3. Straight. Ankle seems ok but Dave has no trouble catching me.
4. +00:20Up the ditch behind Dave. He is aparently going to take the fields around. No way I will be able to pass him back if I take the same route, so I head straight forgetting that I have already run most of the way up the ditch. E of the line I natrually miss all the features I am expecting and come out at the big buidling in the clearing NE of the control. Dave is no farther ahead than if I had followed him. He goes between the buildings and does not see the bag. I do the same. We are looking in the W reentrant.
5. +00:30Back up to the clearings and in from the trail. I fail to notice the gully jct and waste time on the spur between the gullys. Dave is getting away but not clean either so still close.
6. +00:40Folow Dave low and cross the stream before realizing that #6 is on the W side. Cross back and have a difficult time getting the traction to climb the gully. Get to #6 before Dave. Patrick Shannon is now close behind as well.
7. +00:15Trail by #10. Right to it but, had not read the description and we all lose time before looking on top.
8. Had seen the island leg while going to 7. Dave takes the lead when I hesitate to avoid a 180. Afraid that I may turn the wrong way around the lake after doglegging to 7.
9. +00:30On the straight line but not noticing that the line is from the control across the water and not from the bridge. Patrick and I go straight up and down gullies while Dave pulls away again by taking the bridge. He pulls away still more as he runs SW one spur to early. Patrick and I come out NE of the buildings in to the control.
10. Expect Patrick to pass me but instead he disappears. See Ted and Tom and I think others running toward 9. I recognize #10 as the control I saw while going to #7 and take the clearing and trail right to it.
11. I am alone and head out to the tower not seeing the trail on the straight line. Take the clearings around running as fast as I can manage. After being burned on 7, I slow down to check the description but think it is a stream. Come around the building looking for a stream but see a control with my code leaning on the building.
12. +00:15Going around the wall, I get to far right and out to the trail before realiziing that is not the right way. Have to come in from the road jct SE of the control. This screw up allows Patrick to punch just in front of me. Patrick punches and the bag and epunch fall to the ground.
13. I punch on the ground and chase him. Tom Carr goes racing by and there is someone else there as well. Only one punch at the GO control and I am last in line. Tom fumbles the punch
F. Sprint in trying to get back a place. Do not pass anybody but do manage to tie for the winning run in split. Ted comes in just after me and Dave is in before a minute goes by. Overall a pretty bad race. I was navigationly weak and physically slow. After the race I am less than thrilled to see that sections of the race and some controls have been visible to later starters, a benefit not available to the first starters.
