Race Evaluation

NEOC: Breakheart Reservation: Red

iansmith

1. Straight, over the hill
2. +00:15Right of the line, up the spur to the trail. Attacked via the (dry) pond and big boulder. Some confusion in the circle.
3. Essentially straight. The vegetation was thick on the entire leg, requiring some careful microroute choice.
4. +00:35Down the hill to the rock wall, then north over the hill just south of the control. I stopped for 35 seconds to retie my left shoe and drink water (I punched twice to measure this interval).
5. South around the lake. North was clearly faster, flatter, and easier.
6. Straight. The cliff/knoll was lower on the hill than I expected.
7. +01:00Somehow drifted left while climbing the hill and ended up on a pair of cliffs about 100m SW of the control.
8. Down the spur right of the line. I ran into Katia, but was very tentative. I missed the obvious route choice left of the line, down the reentrant.
9. +01:30My only real error on the course; I tried to contour around a hill instead of going straight, and got confused by the set of reentrants that confronted me. I was too far to the right of the line (north).
10. Straight, between the buildings.
11. +00:58Left of the line to the road; I attacked from the hill just south of the control and the bridge across the stream. I rolled my (right) ankle jumping across some rocks. I also stopped for 58 seconds to retie my right shoe, which I again timed with a double punch.
12. +01:00On trails, though I accidentally overshot my attackpoint and doubled back about 50 meters. Sluggish on the trails.
13. Straight.
14. On the road to the marsh, then straight south. I was moving very gingerly on the road to avoid aggravating my (broken) tibia.
15. North of the lake, then straight. I was momentarily confused by the contours, but I was right where I expected to be. Poor visibility of the control in the circle due to vegetation.
16. Straight. I ended up atop a 3 meter cliff that cost some time descending.
17. Straight across the marsh, though initially caught up in vegetation.
F. I ran right of the line through some moderate green, then decided to bust my way through an ankle deep marsh to get to the road. I wanted to turn on the afterburners at the end, but I restrained myself in the interest of my leg.
