Race Evaluation

US Two-day Classic O Championships: Day 1 Red X

1. Quite excited when I flipped the map over and saw what it looked like, reminded of maps that I've seen of Norway. Trail halfway to the control, then straight.
2. Erroneously started by taking several steps to the SE. I was intimidated by the prospect of going straight on a long leg in this terrain that was diagonal to the grain, for reasons of both navigation and climb, so I shot north up the big reentrant to run the trail along the top of the escarpment. The trail turned out to be too faint to follow, but it was easy enough to stay on the lip. No troubles getting to the control, but this approach was several minutes slower than other people.

5. Stayed to the left of the marshes.
6.
7.
8.
9. Left of the marsh, then got sloppy afterI got past it, and didn't keep track of how many ridges I had crossed, so I went one too many and got myself to the somewhat larger marsh to the SE. Looked at a cliff that seemed to be in sort of the right spot, then realized where I was and went directly to the control 100m to the WSW.
10.
11. I think this was the leg where Waddington caught me, and we took slightly different route choices from here to #13, going at about the same speed, presumably because his knees were disintegrating and the descent was killing him. (I didn't realize it was him until I talked to him the following afternoon.)
12.
13. Did not take the trail, stayed high.
14. Goof, went too far to the right, went around the southernmost knoll and had to loop back.
15.
16. Went down the reentrant and had to climb back up on the power line instead of just taking the trail. Too much running and not enough thinking.
