Race Evaluation

Wrentham State Forest: Red

ParkSchool

1. This was a sucky run and I am embarrassed to report it, but it would insult my sense of integrity to ignore my poorer efforts. The road route was uninspired but clearly optimal.
2. Trail to corner of wall, then around through 2 reentrants.
3. Climbed foolishly from flag, then down to EW trail, then along wall.
4. First bonehead move. Trail to bend, then straight N, but not reading contours (confirming need for magnifier) and stopped short, then ran E to trail to get bearings.
5. To trails to pick up NS trail L of line. Thought I was ropping down early to avoid overrunning control, which proved a good thing as I actually landed right on top of it.
6. Trails, then R around marsh to higher trail. Thought I was departing this trail just before bend to E to come out near junction, but must have left early and crossed NS trail instead. Using a compass might have made sense, but I ran W not S until coming back to trails and getting my bearings.
7. Trails to small steep hill and through gap between green, but then was too high and hit the spur past the flag. Only I didn't figure out where I was until I bailed out to the trail to W before coming back in.
8. Slightly S of W to second trail. Really couldn't read the map hear, so just wandered on top of hill until I stumbled onto flag.
9. Should have run the trails R of line, but couldn't see them for some reason, so went straight. Could have salvaged the leg if I just ran the trail I encountered after crossing stream, but momentarily confused by circular appearing contour 250 m W of control, so continued cross country. Was a thick ugly slog, but nothing compared to the next several legs.
10. This seemed easy, and it should have been. Ran N to wall, thinking I was at 3-way intersection to W of flag, and I probably was, but somehow missed the flag while following the wall, then thought maybe next 3-way intersection was the right one, so fought through more green before recognizing I was too close to the road and coming back. I still don't know how I missed the flag the first time.
11. More profound unpleasantness. I have no idea what happened here. I hoped to run N through the white to the wall, then angle to the trail heading through the green. Only I didn't find any white, and the wall I hit didn't make sense, and I was clearly too close to the road, and the only options seemed to be to run through someone's backyard or fight my way through more green brier, so I opted for the latter. A complete and painful and demoralizing fiasco.
12. Opted to go N through the white strip E of the marsh, but, you guessed it, there was plenty more green brier. At least I wasn't lost this time.
13. Tired of green brier in my shorts, I followed trails until noted cairn on the R which surprised me as I had not recognized that I had already turned W. This further delineated my deficiencies as an orienteer, but at least I was to find the flag from this attack point.
14. EW trail to fork, where I went L, because, I don't know, maybe I just liked the climb. Then I hesitated near flag thinking there were supposed to be two trails, not a trail and a line of cliffs. I really need those magnifiers.
F. Topped off this forgettable performance trying to go straight rather than run either trail option. Didn't navigate very well (what's new) and wound up hitting the final trail just past the intersection with the trail that I had crossed earlier. Ugh!
