3. +00:40Got past the control and hunted too low by the marsh at first.
4. +05:00Drifted far right to the river and took a while convincing myself I had done that. Even then I wasn't sure where on the river I was. I surmised correctly going up to #5 on the way to #4.
5. Having been there I was willing to go faster than I otherwise would have.
6. +02:15I got to the marsh on plan but inexplicable cut right to go up a ridge. After a while I realized it but still was surprised to find myself off by two ridges.
7. +00:15I stayed high using the reentrants to clue me in. Near the end, I let the cliffs push me too far left. I realized this just in time to see Mike Ball going there too.
8. +12:00I paralleled the trail too long, expecting to hit it much sooner. At the trail bend before the burn area I was surprised to see open field where there were white woods--I hadn't had a chance to read the course notes. I started up it, not realizing I had done this earlier in the Highlander the year before. This time, I got stuck in deep ferns that hid holes and fallen logs. After 2 minutes and up the first shelf I turned back. Others had caught up by then. I saw them cut up what turned out to be the good way to go--up the reentrant. I opted to go further up the trail then cut left toward the other trail. I did this poorly such that I hit the next trail not far from Times Sqaure. I came up to the trail crest then cut left toward the control. I didn't read my way across. Near the control I saw one of the guys I'd seen earlier below. He distracted me as I was just above the control. I hit a distinct reentrant just east of the control and didn't stop to read where I was. I went down a bit watching the other guy before stopping. Coming back, Brad W. popped over the hill running strong and steady going down. I heard later that this was his way of clueing me that he'd already hit the control. Eventually I came to that conclusion, wandered a little and found it--ughh.
9. +08:00I charged down the hill well left of the line as Brad and the other guy had done. I realized that I'd have to go down any way to cross one of the streams ahead. I hit the trail a bit far to the left but it was fast getting me past Hogencamp mine and 500m east of the control. Climbing I planned on using a wide multi-contoured reentrant to attack from. I got to it but missed by not reading my way in carefully. I crossed the small stream in an area where it was dry and hit the next that #10 was near before turning back and northward. I tried to relocate on some rocks and got high enough to look across the plain of the top of the mountain. I came down along the correct stream to get there in the end.
10. I went straight toward the rocks then around them to the left to spike it.
11. +00:20Going down to the road I passed Mike Ball again and got caught up in the thorns at the end before turning back and left to go around them. From the road I went to the trail and attacked from the bend just past the area the Highlander started in last year. When I hit a cliff, I chose to go around to the left instead of reading the map. I realized it and cut right in the flat area to the control.
12. I started thinking I would take the trail to the left. The running was easier and pulled me to the right whence I could spy the trail to the right. I went there to the end of the trail and remembered from the Highlander that the running was good all the way to the control.
13. Around the green to the left and on the trail.
