1000 Day: Red Day 4

Nadim

1. Fairly straight.
2. Down the reentrant and across the marsh; then left angling up and counting the reentrants. At the top, because of the reentrants I crossed, I knew I was across from the reentrant prior to the control so I went down it. As I got there, Eddie B. was just punching on the Blue course and had thought that there was a misplacement--he later realized a feature was obstructed by the circle on his map and the control was okay.
3. +02:50I left the control going left of the line. Straighter would have been better. Hitting the road prior to the saddle, I crossed the saddle but turned-in too soon. I hit a clearing too early and was confused to why the control wasn't there. I cut back thinking I passed it and went all the way to the reentrant before turning back lower, passing the first clearing and going to the control.
4. +02:00I went up to the road quickly, went down it, then cut right to run on the right side of the ridge. I cut down to the bald area but couldn't see the control. I went down the ridge line to the next set of rocks, saw it was too close to the road then ran back up to the bald area. Re-checking the map brought me down the right side of the ridge to the small reentrant. As I started this, Karen Williams, who started 4 minutes behind me was approaching.
5. I angled down to the road trying to put distance between myself and Karen. After the marsh I cut left, climbed the reentrant walking much of it and dropped into the next to punch.
6. Over the saddle and contour around the knoll to the control.
7. +00:45I cut left hitting the saddle a little wider than optimum. After angling down to the marsh, I climbed the spur running almost all of it and using the unmarked animal trails. My plan was to follow the spur into the field but I let myself drift on the left side to make the climb easier. Not watching my compass enough took me to the sage and field SW of the control but I realized it quickly and corrected.
8. I cut right going around the big rock feature. I cut left too soon and followed the marsh up to the control. It seemed much farther than it should have been. Right at the end I jumped ahead of Nancy Neuburger who was walking in front of me.
9. I thought about using the trail but the climb seemed high--it would have been better. Instead I stayed low going over the first ridge then on the left side of the next rocky knoll. At the end I caught-up to Joel Thompson and another woman.
10. I took time to eat a Gu and drink since I didn't drink at #5. I stayed low again going around the rocky knoll with the control. Joel and the woman went over the top. Only Joel got there ahead of me again.
11. I passed Joel and went straight. Hitting the ridge it seemed a long way to the end. Joel added doubt in my mind when he wondered aloud behind me if this was the right ridge.
12. I went straight then paused at the first trail crossing. I thought to take it to the left but believed it would be safe enough for me to go the shorter route. I followed the fencing then turned left on the trail after crossing the wooden fence. I cut in at the trail bend but hit the trail to the left, the one with another control on the knoll where I paused. I could see the correct rock from there but was hesitant getting to it and the woman from 9, 10 and 11 caught-up. The trail route would have been better.
13. +00:30The woman who caught-up took off first going on bearing. Instead of looking for the best route, I gave chase. I realized she was going too far left but I didn't correct enough after passing her. I emerged in the clearing over 100m to the left. I recognized the tree line starting to my right but had a hard time believing I was that far left. I checked left first before cutting right and punching.
14. I ran through the clearings on the right side of the line then cut in to the left when I could see the big reentrant and rockly area on the other side. I followed an animal trail down, then not wanting to pass the control I cut left to contour to the reentrant. I was high and seeing another orienteer appearing to started leaving the wooded area I dropped down to find the control in the narrower part of the reentrant.
15. Down the reentrant, I crossed the marsh and started to go straight. I cut left to contour into the correct reentrant and was very hesitant going up since I didn't see the control for so long.
F. Tired. I slogged up then forced a push in the clearing.
