Race Evaluation

US Team - Kingswood: Sprint

Wyatt

1. Right of building, then cruise on down. Probably 2-4 seconds faster than the left route.
2. North, NW to clearing, the W to bag. Again, if you take the road too far west, I think you'll lose a second or three...
3. Straight.
4. SE then along clearing toward control. Haven't tested the straighter route - it _might_ be faster but I doubt it.
5. Straight
6. Straight
7. Straight and through obvious gap. Diagonalling across the parking lot makes sense although I saw a lot of people crossed straight...
8. L/R - sorta Straight
9. This time I went through the building gap that has a road, because there were no parked cars blocking that straight line. In the past I've gone left of the building that's on the line, although that might be slower... I should test this.
10. Ah the long leg. I took the long route which I think is lower than what everybody else took, except perhaps Clem. I went S on road, then on sidewalk that diagonals to parking lot, then straight through to the second parking lot (paralleling line about 150 to the side). Then through the obvious building gap (with one useless elevation drop), followed by a slight climb past 12 and through the gap to 10. The straighter route through the upper parking lot is perhaps a little faster as it's 5% shorter with jump slightly worse climb.
11. SE around both buildings, cutting sharp left at the end. I suspect cutting through the gap may be a little faster, but again, that's probably worth a test. Test results: around is about 1 second faster at race pace. Really not much to worry about, and you can't really tell either way from the map.
12. Straight, w/steep climb just before bag. Straight is 3 seconds faster than left to the stairs (which might have been used by others.)
13. Straight
14. Straight and through gap.
15. Here's another route choice trick. My favorite route is east from bag back somewhat near 13, through the gap just R of line. (This is faster that around behind the buildings to the same point by ~3 seconds.) Then around the hill, behind the building (or in the parking lot if you prefer - actually via the parking is ~2-3 seconds slower) to a point 100m south of 15. Then even keeping around that hill on over toward 15 (actually diagonaling up a bit, around the spur then flat contour run in was 2 seconds faster than around the bottom. This is something I need to work on mentally - taking the contouring route that has a little less climb, but slightly tougher footing, is often a little better than I think.) A left route is fairly inviting too, but the downhill part is much smoother (i.e. value-added fast) on the right route. Still, worth a test (haven't tried the all left route yet.)
16. West, diagonal across the parking lot, then diagonal up the hill around the building and out the trail to bag. After the big parking lot, almost everyone took the stairs despite the fact that it was non-trivially longer than the diagonal uphill. I suspect that costs a few seconds and I'm not sure why it was so popular.. -- Update: Test run showed it's 3 seconds faster to go diagonal up the hill, than to take the stairs.
17. East to the parking lot, then immediately hooked back up around building on NW side. I suspect most people took the parking lot, but I think that has parked car obstruction issues usually, and so isn't quite as good. I'm sure it's pretty close though. -- Update: Test run showed it's 1 second faster to go right...
18. Along the edge
F. And a final route choice. I think the best route is to stick as close to the line as possible, cutting just right, and then left of a building to make your way to the finish. A very close second is to go left of both buildings that are under the line. However, I don't know if many took either of those (although I know Clem took my 2nd favorite route...)
