1. P D P R 1 +00:27http://garingal.com.au/gadget2014/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=708 Rocks were very slippery. Nearly fell on my toosh. Time lost mostly due to studying map at the beginning.
2. P D P R 1 Ran straight down the hill. Arrived at control without any difficulty.
3. P D P R 2 First long leg. Poor Plan: Wasn't completely firm in my plan before I left the control... Should I follow a straight bearing or head towards the cross roads and take a second bearing. I took off unsure of which to do. As I approached the main road I could see the intersection about 50m away. Decided to take a second bearing from where I was. Poor Picture: Hesitated at the first small track thinking I had hit the main track rather quickly. Hit the control without any issue, despite my waivering.
4. P D P R 2 +03:12Second long leg. Time was lost partly due to fitness, and partly because I slowed down a lot as I crossed the rocky section. GPS showed the my route was really straight and I got to the control. Lost a minute trying to find the control once I got to the vicinty - but was confident that I was in the right place. Crossed the rocky spurs thumbing the map quite well.
5. P D P R 1 +01:15Third long leg. I had several plans and could not make a decision. Same as always - to take the direct route or to navigate via waypoints. Decided that a direct route would take me over a rocky hill, so opted to run first to the corner of the track. From there I couldn't decide whether to run through the dark green sections of the map. I think it was mostly luck (and a compass) that saw me get to the second main track a the right spot. I saw the track around the hill and made use of it. Three or four competitors all converge on the area as I arrived, it was kind of funny as we were all looking around the boulders trying to find the control. I spotted it first and slid down an embankment to get to it. A little bit of excitement.
6. P D P R 1 A short leg, compared to the previous three, which seemed suddenly easier. At to that, one of the competitors was someone I knew to be doing the same course. I had a brief moment of "do I just follow her and be assured of getting to the finish without getting lost". But where is the fun in that!! It did make me faster though, seeing her running in the same direction as me gave me confidence, so I didn't spend as much time double checking that I had the direction right (and her bearing was slightly different to mine, but since it was a short leg I didn't let that stop me).
7. P D P R 1 Same again, having a competitor near me encouraged me to make faster choices, I was immediately confident in my first bearing as the other competitor was running ahead of me! I didn't take any time to picture the route or plan much, just took a bearing and ran - I glanced at the map as I was running and had a decent picture of the last 30m around the control, made a slightly different route choice which earned me the fastest time on this control (The bit of immediate competition was fun, and couldn't hurt either of us as we were in different classes).
8. P D P R 1 +00:09Suddenly felt like a dear in the headlights. The second last control was in view of the spectator arena. The other competitor barely hesitated while I fumbled with my map trying to make head and tail of all the streamers. I was tempted to just follow her but didn't want to blindly follow someone else. I didn't spend too much time thinking about it, just tried to confirm that the other person was going in the right direction. The final controls should be easier if I took the time to study the arena before leaving on my course.
F. P D P R 1 Ran fast. Egged the other person on as I went past, hoping to encourage her to put in a final spurt (as I knew she was in a tough class), but possibly just seemed like a crazy person.
