Race Evaluation

Wolf Den NEOC meet: Red Course

pkturner

1. Not real sure of my overall time, because I didn't punch my watch until control #2.
2. Mostly straight, passing right of the low knoll and then aiming south to miss most of the laurel. But ended up mostly in the laurel until I reached the linear marsh. Recognized I was on knoll east of marsh and from there it was easy.
3. Up to trail, just like Charlie.
4. Around on the trail to the left. Approaching along the west side of the marsh, an old road was helpful and when my pace count said to keep my eyes open for the reentrant, there was the control right next to the road!
5. +02:30The road continued in the general direction of 5, but I had to leave it after passing the cliffs on my left. Ended up on the wrong spur 80m to the east. At first I thought the control was missing, but after a couple of minutes realized my parallel error.
6. +01:30Same plan as Charlie, but upon crossing the road missed the trail and ended up going through woods on a pretty direct route left of the large green patch. These runnable woods are what i came back to Wolf's Den for. Lost some time at the road crossing wondering where the trail was, and lost some more time approaching the control because even with my eyes wide open in white woods it must have been hiding behind a tree. But the lack of a trail didn't slow me.
7. Left to trail. After descending the hill the map shows the trail bending to the left, but I came to a T where my trail stopped on another trail. I assumed I was near the mapped bend, and left the trail on a compass bearing which worked out fine since I found first the bend in the ravine and then the reentrant containing the control.
8. +02:00Near the control, cut the corner up the hillside which was a complete mistake, since the control was pretty low and the reentrant was almost too steep to descend into.
9.
10. Left the trail 220m before the control, planning to follow stone walls while enjoying the runnable woods. Didn't see the east/west wall midway to the control, but trusted my pace count and didn't let that throw me off.
11. +01:00Started off on the eastbound trail, and then cut to the southeast imagining runnable woods. Well, they were mostly runnable but they were cut by problematic streams.
