Race Evaluation

Hudson Highlander:

pkturner

1. Followed the crowd.
2. Most were going right around the hill; I went left along with Jeff Saeger. At the control someone said, "Hey, Jeff got ahead; must have read his map!"
3. Bad route choice
+03:00
I didn't like the look of the laurel on the direct route, and so left off following and took the trail by the two reservoirs. Wasn't counting on how hilly the trail was. Others followed my route, including Charlie DeWeese.
4.
5. N to the ride, then skipped left to the trail up the ridge.
6. Took water while the clock was ticking for King of the Mtn.
7. Left the road and followed the right side of the hill.

11. Spent 5 minutes eating and drinking prior to reentering the woods. Met up with Paul Bissett.

Paul and I went higher than intended.
13. Did not check features en route
Read map too late
Did not like map
Confused parallel features
Bad distance judgement

A small ledgy spur just north of the control threw me off, and I didn't know which spur we were on until Paul said we have one more to go.

Headed SW for the trail, and followed it down. Caught up with Paul who had started off more directly, left of me. It looked too big to be the little trail that I didn't want, but sure enough, we ended up going too far on the eastern trail and not finding a good attack point. Paul followed streamers back up to the control, and I followed him.
19.
20. Paul departed, while I stopped at the aid station to empty out shoe, eat, and replenish Camelback. That took 6:25.
21. Down SSW to the road.
22. Followed trail to right, then west between the laurel thickets along the rock slope. Saw Paul leaving the control ahead of me, but did not see him again for 3 more controls.
23.
24.
25. Followed the distinct trail a little, to the SE, then found the indistinct trail over the hill. Then down and found the next trail to be streamered, eventually hooking up with a larger trail going SW to near control 23. At the control met Paul again, approaching from the east.
26. Bad compass work
Confused parallel features
Unused to terrain

I thought about jogging around on the roads, but Paul and I headed directly for 24. We were drawn off to the right by the laurel struggles and ended up south of the second marsh and going to the road. Paul found the trail leading toward the control.
27. Paul Bissett and I started from 26 at the same time but I took a few seconds to try to figure out why he was heading east. Giving up, I went south to the clearing on my own, getting to the control well ahead of Paul.
