Race Evaluation

OOC Wesley Clover Ski-O & Snowshoe-O: Long

boyle

1. I was the only one to snowshoe, not ski. Two of my weakest legs were diagonals across open fields when maybe I should have used pack trails around the square. Powder depth was minimal but still hard work.
2. This diagonal across open field was much faster, relatively speaking.
3. For the most part, I used skate ski trail.
4. Approaching control 4, I finally encountered the many mentioned unmapped trails, leading to great confusion and slipping out of 9th position for good.
5. This leg confirms that I need a new and decent compass. My bearing across the middle of the map failed and I had to overrun to main gate on Corkstown to get straight.
6. My fastest, a straight line run which skiiers could not do.
7. I hesitated to go up cliff.
8. Somehow I messed up trail intersections, seeing control 5 before getting right.
9. I should have done better than the skiiers on this unmaintained trail but I did not.
10. The trail run seemed to take forever.
11. Straight run should have been much faster than skiiers but I guess I'd already been out more than an hour, no calories and no hydration.
12. This was fast leg, going where skis can't and to a control already passed many times.
13. I thought my overland route choice was a good one but slower than all skiiers.
14. I followed snowshoe trails overland and eventually went down to untracked trail from P3. I guess I should have used groomed trails as I fell to my final position here.
15. Straight run on groomed trail and I did out run two skiiers.
16. Though quick leg relative to skiiers, I lost a minute not realizing that control was out north of old railbed. With proper focus, I could have had a very quick leg.
17. Quick and easy on groom trail.
18. This is where my field crossing strategy really failed but only in retrospect. Perhaps if snow in field had been harder, I would have been correct. It didn't help that I went by 19 on the way to 18 and went through steep ditch just before 18.
19. Speed was assisted because I'd already seen this guy.
20. I went right passed this thinking there was no SI unit.
F. Comparing my splits with ski-O legs is not simple. Final leg splits were tweaked by SI guys.
