Race Evaluation

2009 Pacific Northwest Orienteering Festival: Long Red

jeffw

1. Another trivial 1st leg to get us started.
2. Ran to the bend in the trail, then straight up at it.
3. Ran on the hill top until I could cross the "green" in the yellow. Hit both the pond and the marsh. Ran on the trail until I was due east of the control. Uphill into it.
4. Straight shot.
5. Wasn't sure how the fallen timber area would be. Didn't have the stomach for anything brushy, so went out to the trail north of the line. The forest on the way there was very nice running. Ran the trail until I got on top of the hill then went between the marshes to the control. Saw Jan Urban on the way.
6. Beat Jan to the control and tried to get away quickly before he saw me. Went on the east side of the pond. The control was placed a little farther than I thought it should be, but close enough.
7. Followed the line. Stayed on the spur to the right of the deep reentrant. Was planning to run down the trail to the bend, but noticed that it lost a couple of contours so decided to just cross the trail and contour around. Nice running closer to the control. Very Finnish.
8. Hit the pond. The same double boulders from yesterday. This time I ran to the control with confidence (unlike yesterday).
9. Went out to the trail past control #2. Ran through the start. Way out of the way, but turned the control into a gimmee. Looks like I lost time to everyone else.
10. Back down to the road.
11. I didn't really push hard, but my time was very good compared to everyone else.
12. Saw our former USOF president here. Commented that I thought of him every time I stepped on a log (he had a log mishap the day of the sprint). Around to the right of the green.
13. Straight at it. Went past the large boulder cluster. Pulled to the right of the control by Brian May (my fault).
14. Out to the trail down to the junction. Past the double rocks to the control.
15. Very carefully went straight and hit the trail (I was very nervous about missing).
F. To the finish for pictures. Had fun with the finish person about keeping my map.
