Race Evaluation

Sawmill Flats A-meet: Blue (M21+)

Sergey

1. Took right from the start full race speed. Crossed ski lift line, took road along the slope, after clearing took bearing to the paved road curve, finished about 150 m west of the curve, along the paved road to the green area, left of the green, up to the road, up to the path, saw big cliff, control is on the rocks about 100 m west of the cliff.
2. Did not check features en route

Down to the path, along the path to the end (control 20 is somewhere up here). Made a mistake not taking bearing from here to the control, instead continued to take slope gently up and was lost in the maze of roads, half of which is not mapped. Finished about 200 m south of control at the road intersection. Had to run almost back.
3. To the road, along the road to the big clearing and intersection. From here took bearing aiming to the left of the dark green spot in front of the road about 800 m from here. Just didn't pay much attention to all this maze of clearings untill hit the road a little bit to the north from the target. Quickly caught myself where I am, ran a little bit along the road, took up along the green spot, than along the thin green line toward the control. Caught with Bill C. here and run with (and quite often loosing his sight for enture leg :) him untill control 16. Is it co-incidence that I always start behind Bill and see him after 3rd, 4th control :)?
4. Contouring to the road. Took bearing (about 400 m) from uneven road intersection. Clearings here mapped perfectly.
5. Bearing ~ 200 m
6. Bearing ~ 200 m. Area is mapped perfectly here.
7. Bearing ~ 300 m
8. Bearing ~ 400 m. Corrected on green and clearings. So far map is very good.
9. Confused parallel features
+02:00
Fighted through the light green down to the big gully, along the gully down. Here I confused straight road going North-West to South-East with the one I was intented to use which goes from North to South and took the wrong one. Lost about 100 m running uphil untill realized the mistake and corected in the right direction. Caught with Bill again. I was ahead of him untill this point :(
10. On the bearing down to the road and up the hill.
11. Bearing to the next one. Very careful since you can easily be misguided by gently slopes.
12. Bearing up the slope, checked on the road and clearing. Map is very good and readable.
13. Bearing, checking on the road
14. +00:30Bearing, mistook stony knoll but quickly corrected
15. Bearing, checked on the road and open space with bush group.
16. Bearing. Bill is lost somewhere at this point.
17. Along the tape of open spaces, carefully checking features.
18. Down the clearing, along the water bed, along the road. Very easy orange level leg.
19. Long bearing aiming to the top of the hill above the stony ground. Hit it right in.

Here is my major mistake. May be I got tired of these bearings. Instead of taking one I choose to slowly go down and check on open green space and big fallen tree (never saw one:(. Finished way behind control on the path. Only when I saw big cliff above I realized how far I ran (~150m). Run back along the path to the control (way too much familiar trail:).
21. Bearing (YES!) down the paved road. Very hard to hold it because slope is very steep. Down the gully, check on the green area. Up and left to control.
22. More or less on bearing up (very steep). Check on the ski slope.
23. +00:30On the bearing (YES!) down the paved road to the intersection with big road, along the road, along the path. ~50 m to control stepped on the stone buried in the soft dirt and badly twisted my ankle. I hope I didn't scared poor girl running in parallel with my chants and exclamations. Had to stop to get control over the pain and continue. Untill this point I was leading and started to loose gain due to decreased speed.
24. +00:30Down to the trail, along the trail, taking right turn, from the small bent bearing to the control. My ankle is hurting me.
25. +00:30Back to the trail, along the trail, cross the clearing, along the path in the green to the control.
26. +00:15Along the path, along the road
F. +00:05Ankle is hurting. I would finish missing whole August due to this injury. I tried to run at USA champs in CO but I should not do that. I just finshed re-injuring myself again. My advice with twisted ankles - RICE (Rest, Ice, Calm, Elevation). Do not start running untill the moment you feel it completely healed!
