Race Evaluation

QOC Pohick Bay: Blue

1. P D P R 4 +01:12Started out ok, but must have come in just below the circle and ended up on the large spur. Should have recognized the ditch.
2. P D P R 3 Came to the intersection, more right than I wanted to be, but made an effective AP.
3. P D P R 2 +00:20went around right instead of left, which was where the control was...
4. P D P R 2 Right at it on azimuth and reading terrain, came out a bit left but read that in the terrain.
5. P D P R 3 +02:17Some unmapped stuff going on about the time my pace count told me I should be there. Walked cautiously for a bit playing control bingo until I found it.
6. P D P R 4 +00:38The map didn't really represent what was going on on top of the hill very well. Got up there well enough, just happened to realize the trail I was on beside the reentrant was one over from where I needed to be.
7. P D P R 3 Nailed this one, easy push up the long reentrant, past the restrooms, down the ride and the spur to the feature. Muddy on the way in! Relatively good split.
8. P D P R 4 Thought about pausing to eat, but this was a short leg with an opportunity! And indeed it was, I won this split for blue. Read the stream junction and came up on azimuth, saw the control from a ways out. Spike!
9. P D P R 4 +00:40A bit slow to 9, was below it and hesitant finding the control - wanted to see it before I committed to running hard. Got off left, back thru 7 and ended up low almost to the golf course.
10. P D P R 4 +00:30Didn't see the option low, and I even looked! Wonder if anyone tried it. Went high, easy running, almost got off the trail early but caught myself, came too far left down the spur without hitting the trail and was momentarily confused, then saw the reentrant and knew where I was. Even then, stopped short and didn't see the control 30m away until I turned my head wiping sweat from my face!
11. P D P R 3 +02:00Funny, AP reports no error here. Came over the top, down left when i thought I was more on the line...and so I ended up turning left and coming up the reentrant 4 was in and then over. Found the control easily enough, but could have been a good bit faster.
12. P D P R 4 bingo control, azimuth work was good and caught sight of the control a ways out, but then almost lost it behind a tree on the way in! Start of a string of some good splits.
13. P D P R 4 Blundered in the right direction, came out a bit left, corrected. Perhaps should have taken trail around instead? Didn't see that option at the time.
14. P D P R 4 Decided to take the trail around and attack from the back. 4th fastest, evidently a good call.
15. P D P R 3 +00:10Hurled myself in the right direction, hesitated at the end when I should have known from the vegetation I was in the right place.
16. P D P R 4 +00:20Ended up higher right than planned, but came in through the depression in the circle and found it easily enough. Hesitated at the end.
17. P D P R 3 Went straight at it, came off the trail jiggle and nailed it. Hard to see, not quite what I was expecting, though.
18. P D P R 2 Trails.
19. P D P R 3 +01:15Came at this one along the trails, should have just run out to the circle and based up. Instead, cut in along the reentrant and must have ended up going due north instead of east to the tip of the spur. Nothing really made sense...
20. P D P R 3 +00:30Ended up a bit high on the spur through the steep part and had to slow down; didn't recognize that I had to cross a trail to get to the reentrant at first and had stopped short looking at the N-S reentrant paralleling the trail and wondering why it was not mapped...
F. P D P R 1 Just ran in vaguely the right direction, figured it would be at the end of the trail, momentarily confused looking for the field...
