Race Evaluation

NEOC: Blue Hills Traverse: Traverse

PBricker

1. Followed. Saw Peter dart right and lead a pack in.
2. Followed. Not sure how I got to it. Charlie was just ahead of me.
3. Started navigating. Took trail to right.
4. Went around on trail to the north and down along marsh. Probably lost some seconds.
5. +03:00Left the group (why?) and wandered a few minutes, finally realizing I was low and too far. On my own from here until 17.
6. +02:00Poor route choice, poor execution. Saw Scott andGeorge up ahead plunge into the green, but after the warning at the briefing I decided not to follow them. Went all the way to the road, planning to cut accross top of ski slopes, but got carried away and ran 75 m. too far down the road. Came back up over and down.
7. +04:00Road to main trail NE, then SE trail along the marsh, cutting corner to trailing going east, past junction to cliff and then in. But ended up too high in open area SW of control, floundered around through crap, then relocated at the stone wall and in
8. Straight, letting reentrant lead me there.
9. E to trail, then followed line from the junction. Used boulders to lead me to it.
10. Forked right at trail and right to it.
11. Some hesitation, but read the contours right to it
12. +00:30Took road to trail cutoff to road and in from the south. But hit road way north of where I meant to.
13. Includes lengthy water, fig newton stop. Was already quite dehydrated. Scott came in to aid station a bit before I left. Went straight: up small trail and then used boulders to go right to it.
14. Trails, being careful at each junction. Attacked from dark green. Saw Jeff Shapiro ahead of me at control, but then never saw him again.
15. +01:00Meant to go a bit right and down the stone wall, but I hit the trail at the big boulder and figured I might as well take the road down. Then slow trudging in to get it.
16. Bend in road, over knoll, and right to it.
17. Attacked from bend in trail. Caught up to Terry here.
18. +01:00Went a bit too far south of line tthrough boulder field to small trail. When I turned south on trail I missed the small trail heading northeast and had to climb back up to it. Easy attack from trail-stream junction.
19. +02:00Mistake at 18 allowed Terry to get ahead of me, and Scott to catch up. We all converged on the trail and headed for 19 together, attacking from trail due south of control. Instead of staying with them, I took my own line and went past it a bit low. Corrected after checking two boulders to the north.
20. Attacked from the southwest, over the knoll and in. Caught back up to Scott and Terry.
21. Started feeling dead tired, and fell twice.
22. Went around on road (with Scott). Would have been a good choice if I could have run faster than 10 minute mile pace, but probably lost some time. Very slow picking my way through the rocks to the control.
23. Trail options to left and right looked about even. Hamstring started cramping and had to run very slow. Attacked from bend in trail east of control. Converged at control with Scott and John H. coming from the north.
24. Easy, but slow.
25. I was first to the trail. Scott fell off the pace. John was right behind me into the depression.
26. Still with John right behind me. We both walked up the hill.
F. I had a good lead on John going through the open area when my hamstring seized. Had to walk it off as John went jogging by.
