Race Evaluation

US Individual Champs, Day 1: Blue

Tundra/Desert

1. First map contact at the S junction with Taylor Farm Trail. Found #121—a good attack point. Nailed it.
2. Nailed it.
3. Nailed it.
4. Nailed it.
5. Missed slight right, look left, nailed it.
6. Nailed it.
7. Crossed the stream after Jim Eagleton, then went up the vertical green lines for about 20 seconds. Realized it, went back to the flat, passed Eagleton again. Did not take the trail. Nailed it.
8. Nailed it.
9. Left of the line. Nailed it.
10. Left the trail a bit early but nailed it. Just over 42 min—pace for 84 is working.
11. Greg Sack with his stupid camera. Paved road. Some kids were washing in the stream. Nailed it.
12. Nailed it.
13. Guess what...
14. Was going to miss it but saw it to my right and nailed it. 60' and large change—still on the pace for 84.
15. First loss of map contact, but found the reentrant NNE of the bag and nailed it.
16. Thought that this was #16 and left WNW, as if headed to #17. Realized this after about 35 s and corrected, but went through the green blob. Nailed it.
17. Did not like map

Was expecting it to be at the edge of the pit (high), so was going along the northern E–W boundary of the green and looking to my left. Kept doing that until saw the paved road ahead. Turned around and came back, saw Alan Young. "It should be here." "Yell once you get it." Alan had no hesitation going into the green, and found it about 20 s after the conversation.
18. Nailed it.
19. Through the assembly area, nailed it.
20. Through the finish, nailed it.
