Race Evaluation

NEOC Troll Cup Day 2: Red

EWhite

1. Bad map reading
+00:30
Launched 30s or so behind Mark Dominie. Attacked through saddle while he took trail. Started looking for control too soon. Reached control just behind Mark and JJ.
2. Watched them go too far down the trail, chuckled to myself, and plunged in.... to a tangle of mountain laurel. Bailed out and followed them to west side of green.
3. Straight and steady - spike! JJ and Mark were off to the left then came back across my path on west end of hill. Burst of elation as I realize they haven't seen me at the control. Tiptoe, tiptoe... take off!
4. Underrated difficulty
Ran too fast
Could not relocate
+04:30
Took off a bit too hastily. Hit attack point where trail crosses ridge west of control but miss (ridge leads north of feature) and wander about with sinking spirits until stumbling on trail to north. Finally get to control to be told by Peter Gagarin that Mark asked how far ahead I was. Mark and JJ are long gone.
5. Hesitated
+00:15
Trail run allows me to run them down. Flaky rock mapping causes hesitation just short of circle.
6. Did not plan ahead
Decide to push, so disengage brain and run through green, across trail and over spur while Mark and JJ follow the reentrant.
7. +00:45Take trail around north side of hill with JJ following. Mark goes right and is not seen again. Have trouble at circle - hesitate on spur to north of control. JJ heads downhill. Start to follow, then decide that can't be right and go around, finding spring and then up into reentrant. Pass JJ coming up as I head downhill.
8.
9. Pass Tom Bruce looking confused. Feeling pretty good - JJ and Mark are behind me and I've caught Tom. Punch, then see Alar come scorching up towing JJ.
10. Ran too fast
Read map too late
Tired
+01:00
Pace increases dramatically as I try to hang with Alar and JJ. Veer too far right in my haste and wind up way too far downhill. Last spot them disappearing up the reentrant about 3 contours up. Tiring badly.
11. Bad route choice
Bad map reading
Follow winding path from upper trail to lower trail then NW across stream. Cross reentrant that is my attack point without recognizing it and relocate on north side of marsh. Attack from trail and meet Tom Bruce coming from the south.
12. Tired
+00:15
West across valley and follow 20m behind Tom up the trail. Wish he would run faster and leave me or slower and fall behind. Anything but a spring at the end. Get my wish by bobbling in the circle.
