NEOC Troll Cup Day 2: Red

Nadim

1. Bad route choice
+00:30
0-1 Warmed-up mostly w/a jog to the start. I saw Peggy heading off straight up the hill then onto the switchback trail and Daniel Schaublin going up the trail, off the first switchback to the right. Since both were on Red, I was a bit puzzled. Daniel had about a minute headstart on me and Peggy had a few more. I headed off like Peggy, crested the hill on the trail, went down a way, then cut over. I hit the reentrant high. Had I read more carefully, I wouldn't have gotten distracted by the control at the top of it. As it was, I climbed a bit to check it out before dropping down in the reentrant. I hesitated at what appeared to be a knoll just before the control, then past it to the next.
2. 1-2 Down the reentrant to the trail, right, then left across the next reentrant toward the trail. I had to cross rocks and a second reentrant that I hadn't noticed before on the run before getting there. An older guy I didn't know had punched about the same time but coming from direction of the power lines.

2-3 I was not confident about the next leg but didn't really wanted to catch-up to the others who started ahead of me. It seemed too easy going straight across the flat. I set a good bearing crossing the first trail but as the other guy I saw at 2 headed off to the left, I thought I should keep within sight. Upon crossing the second trail, I thought we'd come upon an unmapped mountain bike route. Going on, I soon relocated at rock near a trail intersection. Taking the trail to get close, I left at a trail bend. However, it was one rise too soon. I did a loop one knoll north of the control and saw a younger woman come through before going to the right knoll and punching.
4. 3-4 As I left, the younger woman punched behind me, having missed her fist attack at #3. I headed along a ridge following it to a junction of streams. Turning left, I recognized the large knoll on my right and knew I had to go further to find it. I stayed along a ridge and spiked it.
5. 4-5 Heading straight-off, I slowly crossed right over the marsh before hitting the trail. On the climb, I made-up a lot of ground on Doug Gosling whom I'd never met and unbeknownst to me had started some minutes behind. It was hard to read and run the rocky trail. I turned left at the next intersection. I missed seeing Doug bear right to come-in from behind. Aiming to go between the fight, I left the trail at the ride on the right. I was very hesitant, wanting to get it right as I crossed the stream. Coming upon a cairn that was unmarked, I presumed it mapped as a knoll, then turned left, still hesitant. I read the next knoll on the right and climbed the hill to spike it.
6. 5-6 I took a very straight path. Upon cresting the first ridge, I saw Doug coming up the quicker way through the reentrant. I contoured across it gaining a little more ground before punching.
7. 6-7 I climbed and read. By the time I'd gotten to the trail, I had about caught Doug. He didn't hesitate as he turned left. I thought a bit before going right along the high road. The climb was short and wasn't hard. It had a nice view though I didn't stop. I was glad to see an intermittant trail droppind down the other end. As I crashed my way down, Keg Good stopped to give me right of way passing. At the bottom, Doug had just crossed in front of me so I came in behind. At the reentrant, Doug had dropped but headed down the wrong reentrant going almost south. I turned left, saw what appeared to be it, then looked up as Keg had paused above me. Going down, I spiked it.
8. Did not follow plan
Bad map reading
Confused parallel features

7-8 I didn't like the footing and undergrowth going down so I moved to the right of the reentrant. Things started not to match-up. I don't remember seeing the creek as I climbed a little. I wanted to go up the saddle SW of the control. Soon there was a big drop-off on my right and I realized I was over too far. I rough compassed my way up and was right on target.
9. Hesitated
8-9 I sweated this one because I've had trouble with short legs. Going on bearing, I ended-up just a little bit right but at least I didn't pass it. I should have pace counted but didn't.
10. 9-10 After a drink I angled down the reentrant to the bottom, the up the one to the right. I was tired climbing but mostly kept moving. I used the trails a little as I zig-zagged my way there. I passed Keg Good again (She ran Green) one reentrant before the correct one. I was too low and had to come up a ways to the rock.
11. Hesitated

10-11 A brief instant had me thinking to go straight, but I climbed to the trail and started to take off. Passing a lot of people going the other way, I started to feel good as the trail crested and started to go more downward. I started flying after that passing Dave Onkst going the other way on Green. Soon I came upon Peggy and tried to cheer her from behind. I had intended to turn right at the next intersection but as I saw Peggy go straight, It occurred to me to go on too and use the power line trail. At the T-intersection, I stupidly hesitated to read and set a bearing. Peggy was almost up the hill when I'd started again. I saw her angling north but I wanted to stay out of the slash and went more NW. I heard someone tailing from behind and wondered who it was. Crashing down to the trail, I'd set off at a brisk pace, when I heard a blood curdling scream from behind. I stopped and looked back as to hear more wailing. Karen Williams had sprained her ankle. She soon waved me on so I took off again. After the trail joined and left the power lines, I was delighted to see Daniel Schaublin coming the other direction. 30 meters more and I attacked to the vague knoll in the slash. I guess my sense of up and down was off--I thought I was on top but didn't see anything. About 20 seconds later after standing and looking more slow, I saw it to my right--I'd over shot a little bit and with it hung low and somewhat faded I'd missed it earlier.
12. 11-12 Headed back to the power lines, I heard more screaming, then saw Karen limping on. Instead of crossing right away I dog-legged back to just before the trail was about to leave the power lines again. I wanted to use the trail plus save the climb ahead when crossing the reentrant. Judging from the lack of an elephant trail and the knee-high stickers, no one else had gone that way across the power lines. I dropped down one reentrant into the larger one, passing through or very near the fight green. It wasn't bad. crossing the stream and climbing, I hit the trail just N of the big intersections. It took me a few seconds to realize that I hadn't passed the triangular intersection. I was hesitant as I headed up an into the reentrant, taking a bearing more than once. I got to the power lines and turned left. Seeing the big hill, I knew I needed to get close before cutting in. Other had taken the turn just before I got there and I scrambled to get around all of them successfully before punching.
F. Not thinking clearly

12-F Following the streamers, it seemed a long way. At the trail intersection I saw a control from another course and doubt entered my head. I stopped to check it to make sure I hadn't missed anything as I had done a few times over the spring/summer. Looking at my control card, I knew I didn't have to punch here but I couldn't see any punch marks from #12. I cursed, then turned around to head back and punch rather than face a DQ. I got back a ways before turning over my card to just make out the faint holes from #12. I turned around again, a little relieved and feeling more than a little foolish.
