Race Evaluation

NAOC2014 SML training weekend: Saturday Long Advanced

boyle

1. It's been a while since I had to half mile to start.
2. I should have learned right away to start taking bearings, having messed up leg 2.
3.
4.
5. I was surprised to see new bridge. From there I went overland.
6. SW to trail and familiar location
7.
8. Trains began to catch me, pulling me out of last place.
9. Few of strayed right of and north past control.
10. Others in train went west but I backed up and found closed trail south. I knew I was heading to ruins yet still hesitated. Of course control was inside ruin against highest wall.
11. While a straightforward leg, I hesitated at every height of land, hoping flag was there.
12. After challenge of finding 11, I tried to exit with stealth but drifted right and missed pass, stumbling back towards 10. From there NNW to green crossing but again drifted right, having to back track.
13. I was stuck, confused, lost just 100m E of control til I noticed close trails.
14. I suspect I screwed up, nearly leaving map NNE of 13 round distant lake, stumbling round nice terrain but never found myself on map and flunked out seeing 14.
15. Quite happy with good, short leg but
16. totally messed up next short leg. I still don't know what went wrong.
17. Best leg only because of good visibility and following.
18. Tried for straight W but drifted left and stopped short.
19. Plan was to attack from fence. I should have gone N to trail and the joined fence right from trail. Instead I attempted overland and now believe I used remnants is east west rather than correct fence. Depressing leg put me in last place.
20. I gave up my false confidence with familiar terrain and started taking bearings.
21. Rest of race went well, on my own.
22.
23. I thought I did poorly on the beaver dam leg but better than many others.
F. 1000m back to SI tent.
