Race Evaluation

Canadian Orienteering Championships 2008: Sprint Course 5

boyle

1. My knee did not appreciate the vertical drop down the start chute to the start control.
2. I yelled out to M but she didn't hear.
3. WinSplits reports my leg as third fastest.

6. Things went well until I blew the whole race on this leg. Rounding the reservoir for the second time I left the sidewalk to early, went up hill, through green, checking out two dummy controls. It was such an easy control had I only stayed on the sidewalk.

8. The map was so busy in the village of retired chalets that I went from #7 to #12 and watched a poor senior racer clobber himself, hitting his head on a steel cross bar that separated a chalet from an outbuilding. The control was nastily hidden between the chalet and the outbuilding. I had now been forewarned of the potential for concussion. Apparently, the COF president's weekend of racing ended with her collision with said pipe.

15. I waved to M just as I dropped cliff side but was a bit E of control. A mandatory road crossing was included in the leg. The rest of the race was in the forest and resembled real orienteering (which isn't my thing).
16.
17. The illegal 5m contours hid the nasty steep climb in these hills.
18. This control will live in infamy as the sneaky designer placed the control inside the fence of a tennis court farthest from the entrances to the court. The controls sat on a saw horse just out of reach for even my pencil thin arms. Of course, we fought through nasty vegetation just to get to a control we couldn't reach. The center of the control circle fell just outside of the fence but the control descriptions clearly described the control inside the fence corner. Who reads that part of the control descriptions? This was a brilliant and nasty course design, just the way sprints are supposed to be. I love sprint-Os, even when I blow them.

20. Straight down and S to parking lot behind golf pro shop and down the trail to open field. I watched too many racers leave trail to early.
21. ...another trail side control
22.
23. I blew this leg big time, slowly wandering around aimlessly and fell out on trail 100m short of tennis court rather than fall out on tennis court as a catching feature.
