Race Evaluation

2008 Laramie Daze & US Champs: US Champs: GreenX Day 2

Charlie

1. Easy
2. Left of aspen patch and under the rocks, checking off the open yellow on my right, then on compass and watching for the aspen patch just R of control and straight in. Saw Bob Ellis miss ahead of me, coming in from the left and going right past it, then coming back as I was headed to #2.
3. +00:15Below first part of aspens then through second part and straight up. Over top of spur to big rock, but then had to stop to study the map to figure out where the cliff was - other side of the rock.
4. +01:00Not a very good route - just left of line to cross first aspens at narrower spot, then instead of going around left of aspens, went W a bit and crossed E of big monolith, which was a long slow way through the aspens. Heard Peter thrashing on my left, and he was out ahead of me. I could see the outcrop ahead of me, but no reason not to follow Peter into the control.
5. Easy control on compass and line of sight, but again no reason not to follow Peter, maybe 10 seconds ahead.
6. Left of large rocky knoll and aspens, and then I could see the giant boulder. Peter about 40 seconds ahead now.
7. Peter out of sight once I hit the fence and on my own. R of large boulder and straight in.
8. Left around large boulder because R looked a bit thick, and then straight in, hopping on the tuffets in the marsh, but still getting wet and muddy.
9. Left of big knoll and on compass. Could see the flag from a distance.
10. +06:00Crossed fence near double rocky knoll and on compass. Apparently just missed rocks and clearing on my right, as I came out just left of yellow finger and across from boulder cluster in the white. Several attempts to find, all to no avail, until at last I found it in a place I had been through at least twice already.
11. Suddenly much more tired going up the slope, over the top of the first knoll and easily found from there.
12. Aiming between the rocky knoll on the left and the aspen patch on the right. Up and right onto the control. A struggle to keep moving.
13. Also a struggle, walking up the hill on an angle through the sage and juniper. I could have gone faster here if I weren't harboring frustration from the big loss at #10, I think. Certainly I could have shaved a few seconds by going further in the yellow and then straight up the hill instead of the angle approach. Didn't vary from the straight line at all. Control was right on my line from the saddle I crested the hill on.
14. On compass, and headed for the rock one beyond, but turned right and saw the flag.
15. Up above the big rocks and straight in, but getting tired.
16. +01:00Down a nice unmapped stretch of yellow between the aspens in the reentrant and the bare rock spur, then checking all the boulder pairs in the area, some much bigger than the ones the control was on. (So how were they mapped?) I was off a bit to the west
17. On compass, but lacking confidence and hesitating a bit after the last one. I just expected to see the flag sooner than I did.
