1. | This was an unusual start, I went straight to first control: trails then SW from intersection.
2. |
Did not follow plan | There might be something to this idea of talking on course and losing focus. Fifteen minutes after conversing with Richard, I found myself heading N (instead of S). I wasn't the only one out on the east shores of Lac Carman. Much of the trail back to the map was under water.
3. | Guided by the model-airplane landing field, I still managed to drift left, cross major stream and pass #7 before I got squared away. I wasted some perfectly fast pasture running. While frustrated at the time that I could not gain on John racing across the pasture, since reviewing my ground speed, I may not have much more.
4. | With the knee, I have to adjust route choices for fencing and stream fording. Thankfully, the electric fencing was disabled.
5. | |||||||
6. | Having watched John retreating to #5, I was inspired to run hard and right through stream to #6 which can be seen a long way back.
7. | As mentioned, I used fence lines but still had to climb fences. I sadly watched John pull away again through the pasture. It's no wonder he won Mad Trapper.
8. | After the recent AP banter about water stops, I fully partook, not wishing for the dehydration issues of two weeks ago.
9. | Went far right to bigger (and second) ski trail up the hill but I probably should have gone with the first trail option which others took. Overland to control was straightforward.
10. |
Did not check features en route Bad distance judgement Followed others | I got myself anxious about nailing this leg before I got there and I blew it big time. I hit the correct trail (which was strangely marked with flagging tape) but found no control amongst many cliffs S of trail, aborted S through woods thinking I might be on the trail too far N. That trail had no cliffs so headed back toward #9. I set off again down flagged trail with some helpers this time who eventually dragged me further along the trail to the more obvious cliffs. I should have run to the trail curve or the right-side reentrant. What a waste.
F. | Straightforward trail sprint though my helpers went further along past my first snowshoe trail. The rock covered clearing was treacherous but useful. |
