Race Evaluation

Mt. Penn - Pagoda: Red

Nadim

1. Bad route choice
+02:00
I got to the meet site with only a minute to go to my start time so my shoes weren't tied like I usually do. I had no warm-up and was not in the best state of mind. I went straight, passing the above the first reentrant. When I got to the ridge, I wasn't sure if I was too high or low. I went down until I could see a house through the trees ahead, then 180'd back up the hill to the control.
2. Bad compass work
Not thinking clearly
+05:00
I'm not sure what happened. Going kind of straight, I drifted downhill. I mistook a trail crossing to be a different trail, then crossed a marshy area nearly to the edge of the map. I realized finally where I was, turned about, crossed a field and got onto the road breifly to come back. I nearly passed #3 to get to #2. I was sure Daniel Schablin and Peggy would have passed me by now. Approaching the control, Peggy had just gotten there, having started 4 minutes behind. I think Daniel started 6 minutes behind. This was not a good way to start.
3. Following Peggy ahead of me, I dropped straight down to it but didn't try to out-sprint her.
4. Lacked concentration
Disturbed by others
+00:40
I caught Peggy after punching #3, then went straightish. Peggy appeared to go more to my right. I was then not feeling too confident but I saw a stone wall that confirmed where I thought I was. After crossing the power lines, I thought I was too high but knowing Peggy to be on my right, I stayed high until hitting the trail. I dropped down after that straight to it.
5. +00:50First I had to tie my shoes. Peggy had caught-up and took-off before I was done. Following her up we crossed the trail, then I passed her. At the intermittant trail, I went right and angled toward the power lines while she went straight. Going to the bend in the power lines, I set a bearing and clamored over the rocks up the hill. I got drawn to another control, then headed straight there. Time lost for tying my shoe.
6. Did not check features en route
+02:30
Following the trail toward #6, I passed Peggy running the other way to #5. I went straightish. I was worried that I was too far left so I compensated. In doing so, I passed it and curled around to #1. Coming back from there, I hit it pretty well and Peggy had just left.
7. Following the direction Peggy ran, I caught-up going down the hill. She got a little too far right in the reentrant. I hesitated but then went straight-up to it.
8. Hesitated
+01:00
I took a while to think about it. Peggy caught-up and we both took off down the hill. I saw Daniel Schaublin coming to #7 as I picked my way down through the underbrush. Daniel made-up ground on us. I fell at the road and paused before going right. Pausing again because I wanted to attack more diagonally, I chose to go straight after Peggy and Daniel did. Leaving just after the ditch that Peggy shouted-out, I sprinted ahead, picked my way across the rocky ground and got there first. I paused a long while before punching because I got mixed-up on which control we were after. Daniel and Peggy caught me just after punching.
9. +05:00I was disoriented. Had I been alone, I would have used the road. Daniel and Peggy headed more to my right so I followed. Eventually Peggy took the lead after crossing the road and turning left on a trail. At the kink in the trail, I was confident of where I was at and moved ahead. We must have just past it. I headed to a small shallow area and we all expected it to be there. We circled, getting too high. Peggy figured this out first, found it and snuck-off. Daniel and I backtracked to a trail then circled some more. As I saw other runners entering the area, I headed the way they came, then stumbled upon it, hidden low in a pit-like area amongst the rocks.
10. I snuck-out without Daniel seeing me. Wanting to make use of the trail, I dropped down, eventually getting to the road. I angled-up just before the triangle shaped clearing with the water tower. From the top of the triangle I set a bearing and climbed-up hitting it easily.
11. +02:00Some other orienteers were in the area. I wanted to go straight but then chose to use the trails which served me well to #10. I got on the lower one however. Sensing this, I climbed up, then saw a control lower to my left. Upon punching, then examining it, I realized it was #12. I then headed back up to #11. Along the way I saw Peggy, then Daniel Schaublin. Daniel punched just before me.
12. I knew where to go so picked my way down quickly. Daniel followed.
13. I paused to look for a good way. Daniel took-off so I followed, then moved ahead. At the last trail before the control, I wanted to be sure of the attack so-as not to have to climb back up the steep hill. I went left to the gate. This I think confused Daniel who paused. Because I was more confident of the attack, I was able to get there just ahead of Daniel.
14. Hesitated
+00:10
I didn't read the control description quick enough. I saw the clearing but paused to read to be sure. I still got there just before Daniel.
15. Hesitated
+00:20
Daniel got the jump on me as I planned a route. Peggy had fallen in-step just behind but took a better route to the trail. On the trail, the speed picked-up. I stayed behind, then with Daniel while trying to read. At the power line, I turned left and right to use the diagonal trail straight toward the control. Daniel passed this, not having seen it on the map until later. Peggy used the same route. At each intersection, I paused to make sure I was on-route. Time lost for hesitation.
16. On this physical leg, I hoped to lose Peggy and Daniel who had gotten to #15 while I plotted a route. Up the hill, left in the clearing. Right at the next clearing and up to the control. I had mad a gap.
17. +00:30Trying to go straight, I moved higher to avoid the rolling hills. I saw a control on my right, then wondered if I should investigate. To be sure, I got close enough to read the letters and realized it was wrong. I didn't thing the one visible below to my left was right but ran to it. It was right. Daniel made-up some ground.
18. I chose to stick to the trails to have a good attack point. I didn't realize it would climb so much but other than being tired, I navigated on the move. Attacking from the trail junction above the control, I dropped down right to it.
19. +00:30Dropping down fast, I got a little disoriented at the fence. Daniel was there. He wasn't sure if I'd found it or not and I indicated it was higher. Going-on, I saw the parking lot and headed down. I realized I was too low and got wet crossing the marshy area. I think I passed Mary just before getting to the building.
F. +00:02I sprinted-in good but couldn't get the Sport Ident into the hole...
