Race Evaluation

NW Cup & WA Champs: Course 5: Day 2

jeffw

1. Read map too late
+00:30
I saw everyone heading off over the hill to the west, so what the heck I'll go that way too. On top of the hill I aimed for the reentrant with the control in it. I came in too far south and didn't see it until I turned around and went north.
2. +02:00Followed the reentrant south. Went up onto the hill and saw the trees. Went around the brush just in front of the trees. No control. Maybe the trees are my green area. No control there either. The first area must be where my control is. Went around it again. Found the control buried in the brush.
3. Headed straight south. Entered the reentrant through the break in the rocks. Followed the reentrant, aimed for one of the power poles in the distance. Passed one of the poles on top of the cliffs. Continued in the reentrant. Went up over the double reentrant formline. Passed the 3 little hills. Found the control in the reentrant.
4. Feeling kind of whimpy, I went clear around the south end of the marsh. I went to the cliff along the south of the marsh. Eric crossed in front of me as he had just blasted through the marsh. I decided to try and match his speed, which lasted for about a 30 seconds. Came around the bottom of the cliffs and hit the control right after Eric.
5. Followed the trail passed the first big reentrant. Went down the second and hit the control.
6. Bad route choice
+02:00
Decided to stay low and "run" through the open forest. It wasn't very open. I had a hard time climbing over a fallen tree. Found my reentrant. It was very brushy and no control in site. I searched around some more and still didn't see it. Climbed higher and saw it as Kean Williams was punching in just ahead of me.
7. Ran with the top of the cliffs on my left. Went through the trees. Went around the small cliff and on the other side was the control.
8. Aimed for the lake and hit the trail. Followed the trail until it turned to the right. When I got closer to the control, I saw Kean "acting" confused. I saw what I was looking for, came around the other side onto the control.
9. Bad map reading
+00:30
Passed to the south of the cliffs just south of the lake. Decided to head to the impassable marsh NE of the control. I could see the trees at that point. Lost some time looking in the wrong area of the trees, but quickly realised my mistake.
10. Followed others
+10:00
Went through the break between the marshes. Saw a lot of people including Kean heading through the break in the cliffs straight north of me. That doesn't seem right. Oh well, I must be wrong. Big mistake! I realized that things weren't lining up right away. I could see the 2 lone trees in the distance. Ran towards them. As I came around the bend, I saw Kean just as I was expecting the control. There it was! Don't follow other people! I made up a minute on him but I could have made up 10!
11. Set a compass bearing. Could see a post in the distance so I ran for it. I could see the control from the post.
12. Crossed the fence. Followed the other fence onto the road. Really tried to pick up the pace since I could run on some smooth ground for a change. Went to the end of the fence, where the control was hiding.
F. I wasn't exactly sure where the finish was since it wasn't marked on my map. Ran down the road and could see ribbons on the other side of the fence. Crossed the fence and ran hard for the finish.
