Race Evaluation

US Team Trials: Red Y Long

Cristina

1. Took it easy to the first control, respecting yesterday's disaster. Glad it was an easy one.
2. +00:15Popped out the powerline and was immediately confused because I was in front of the track instead of the powerline junction. Figured where I was was actually better and kept moving, carefully still. Vis seemed pretty good, better than what my caution was good for. Probably a good strategy...
3. Tried to ignore the trail mess on the way down to the bottommost trail, but did get distracted. I was a little nervous about the attack, but the bend in the trail was prominent and the veg difference was actually discernable. Feeling pretty confident now, after a few hits.
4. Very careful compass and contouring.
5. +00:30Tried to be just as careful, but not so much. Ended up low, hitting the knoll with a control on it. At least I was able to tell where it was and attack properly from there, but that was quite a bit left of where I intended to be.
6. Drifted high on this one, but the clearing helped get me back on track.
7. Spent a little time looking at this one and decided to go left to the big track and attack from the road bend. This worked well, didn't have to pay much attention on the climb, could run very hard on the track, and hitting the control from the edge of the road was easier than I expected. Feeling pretty confident, especially since I hadn't seen Viktoria yet (sort of afraid she'd catch up on the long leg).
8. Had a hard time deciding on a good route, just popped up to the road then across on the trail. Saw Pavlina across the powerline and was really surprised. Took it easy into the control since she was hitting it ahead and it was basically off the trail.
9. This one looked pretty tricky, mostly just positioned myself based on the hilltop campus and tried to stay a little high. Passed Pavlina on this leg.
10. Pushed up onto the campus and used the powerline corners. Really moving now, feeling very good physically.
11. I was in super careful mode from the attack on the previous control and stayed with it.
12. Ditto.
13. +01:00Looked at this route while on the road and decided to stay high and attack from a parking lot corner. I got to the road split and didn't want to go up, so I stayed low. That meant having to pay a lot more attention and make turns, I'm sure it was a good bit slower.
14. Just off the trail, saw it from far out.
15. +00:30Started out going down to a trail instead of up, and got confused a few times about which trail/track I was on. Sort of a lapse leg.
16. Pretty close to the line here, though I could have cut off more corner at the halfway point trail junction. Attacked from the trail bend, no issue.
17. Ignored the trails and placed myself relative to the large open area.
18. Eager to be done, sort of alternated ignoring and not ignoring the trails.
F. I felt really good when this was done. I knew it was better than usual.
