1. | Arrived about 45 minutes late after having done some creative emergency locksmith work, and thanks to Phil's being accommodating and Clint donating his used map, I was able to scramble and get out on the course. Pretty much a straight shot on the first control.
2. | A little low in an attempt to avoid some green, which wasn't really bad, and found the knoll 3/4 of the way there. Almost bamboozled by a structure that I spotted off to my right, which made me wonder if I was close to the road somehow (I hadn't had time to read the meet notes). but I ignored it and pressed on, finding the control easily, as well as a couple of additional tents which I could then see were to be ignored.
3. | Across the top of the logging and up through the saddle.
4. | |||||||
5. | Most of the climb of the course all packed into one leg...
6. | Split analysis has me losing about six minutes on this leg and the next one, which is actually due in large part to the fact that I was wheezing somewhat after the climb, and not able to move that fast on these two. Saw that I needed to drop about seven lines, but didn't do it, so when I had gone about the right distance, things didn't look like I expected. I must have passed just below the stone weir, but didn't see it. Dropped down the hillside to see if I could figure it out, and hit the long skinny reentrant with the small marsh, which was my original intended attack point, so I had no trouble from there. Encountered Sam Levitin and another guy at the control.
7. | +01:30 | This time I drifted down more than I realized (a line or two), so that when I was about 3/4 of the way there, I was puzzled to not find the trail. I did find it a bit further on, and when I followed it uphill, I realized I was above the big uphill-facing cliff, which I backtracked around, adding an unnecessary 150 m to my route.
8. | S to the road, then grind up the hill.
9. | Somewhat left to minimize the drop through the reentrant.
10. | Hit the trail intersection S of #9, contoured from there, saw uphill-facing cliff below me and headed up, had the good fortune of spotting the control out of the corner of my eye.
11. | Not quite the fastest split, but pretty close. Just blasted down the hill on compass, happy to see a boulder 3/4 of the way there that confirmed my location. Sweet spike.
12. | Straight and spiked it.
13. | Ditto. | ||||||
14. | |||||||
F. | Made the jump over the ditch without getting my feet wet — yeah! And despite my late start, I wasn't the last one back, there were still at least three people still out. |
